Also, if you ask your professor ahead of time, they'll usually let you have your laptop out during class. It makes taking notes a lot more easy

I wouldn't buy too much until I got settled into the house, then purchase everything I needed.

Well, buy the basics... like cleaning supplies and things you know FOR SURE that you'll need.  Otherwise, it pretty much just comes together when you're moving in and organizing things.

Living in the dorms for the first year here, there were definitely some things that I wish I would have brought with me! I needed a much longer ethernet cord for my desk than I bought because my desk was so far away from the hookup- I recommend at least 25 feet even if you have a small room.

Florescent lighting sucks balls, you're going to need a desk lamp and maybe even a bedside lamp.

Also, fans have been my saving grace with no a/c. My roommate and I have 3. Also, hanging storage for the closet is useful as well. My dresser is too small and I don't want to hang everything up.

Our room has super high ceilings and it's SO dusty up there, so we bought a duster with an extendable arm to clean it up before we moved all of our stuff in- it made it feel so much cleaner in here.

I take students in America don't use/have cell phones.  In NZ they are cheaper than landlines and pay phones.  Other than that these lists seem extensive.  Are your dorm rooms big or something?  Ours are tiny

Ok here's a story for you: I'm a freshman at Georgian Court University in NJ, and one of the faculty members in charge of room assignments told me this story: This lady came with her daughter to move into a dorm, and she had 5-6 van loads of stuff. She hired an interior decorator/designer, and she bought decorations and supplies for both her daughter and her room mate. She never met the room-mate, never spoke to her before, but showed up with all this stuff for her. The girl ended up creeped out and had to switch rooms.

Living on campus:

Things to bring with you:

Sheets, twin size
Clothes to last you at least a month
Shoes/Socks/Sandals
Toiletries (toothbrush, medicines, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, brush, pads *if you're a girl, or tampons*, towel/washcloth...etc)
Bedding (Pillow, stuffed animals...)
School supplies
Lighting (Lamps)
Accessories for walls
And whatever else they don't provide. My dorm comes with a couch, desk, bed, dresser, nightstand, closet, sink, shower/tub, etc.

Well, that depends on what you get from your relatives (mine gave me bedsheets and miscellaneous crap), where you get it from, and what you get.

I would imagine $300-400 would do it though.
