I think the reason that he laughed and the reason that it seems early is that generally, young people (20ish years old) can't afford their own homes, especially if they're spending money on continuing their education, like you want to (even if it isn't for 4 years, it still costs, and usually that's not cheap). Now, if you were talking about an apartment, then that's more reasonable. My mom just sold her house for about $300,000.00 CDN - could you afford that much? I doubt it. And that's in a city where houses are relatively not that expensive. In popular living locations, the price goes up. Keep in mind how much it costs to live as well. Food, phone, water, heating, electricity, internet, insurance, mortgage, gas for car, etc, etc. You're right that the amount of independence you have also affects how soon you are ready to move out. I'm 20 and I'm still completely financially dependent on my family, though most of the year I live in university residence on the other end of the continent (so some level of independence, since I need to cook for myself and stuff. It's like living in an apartment, but I'm not paying bills, yet). I'm happy that I'm still being supported by my family, 'cause right now my job is training and I have to pay for it (but when I get faster (by less than a second), the government will pay me. I'm talking sports here, I want to go to the Olympics). Lately, I've been wanting to be more independent, to move out completely, but I can't yet. I figure I probably will when I graduate from uni, or possibly a year after that (since I'll be swamped with repaying my student loans). So, that's 22-23ish. Not to discourage you, or anything. I think what would be best for you is to make a plan. Take into account everything - food, utilities, education, etc - and match it up with the amount you're willing to pay on housing. Then see if you can do it. Anything is possible if you really want it. You have to make it happen. So, if this is something that you want, you may need to make some sacrifices, but you can get it by working for it. Good luck.

Great post, I wouldnt expect to buy a home for $300,000. It way to big. I've found some very beautiful houses in NC 3 bedroom 2 bathroom roughly 2000 sq ft. between $75,000 and $125,00 which we can afford.
------- My post are sometimes controversal. Get over it!

Heh, well there you go then! If you can afford it, and you're ready and willing, then go for it! Good luck and enjoy!
