Gotta go with Gene Wolfe.  Most people have never heard of him.  One of the few authors that was completely over my head when I started reading him and has only gotten deeper the more times I re-read.

Well, I've got a few favorite authors...

Agatha Christie -- great mystery and crime novels! She really is the "Queen of Crime." At the lowest estimates over 2 billion of her books have been sold and are in print.

Brad Thor -- some really great modern-era thrillers

Robin Cook -- great medical thrillers

Michael Crichton -- amazing author, so much so that many of his books have been translated to movies.

Ayn Rand -- even though she wrote very little fiction, I love all of it. Philosophy would be her genre.

====

Of course, these are just some of the ones I have been reading currently--I do have a lot of books!
