I am making dvds out of my favorite tv episodes. I have all the software I need to convert files and make the dvds.

But I dont know which video mode I should use: PAL or NTSC.

I want to fit as many episodes onto a dvd as I can and still have decent quality. If I use PAL, I can fit one more episode on than with ntsc while keeping the bitrate the same.

(Why does pal take up less space than ntsc if it has a higher resolution.)

I don't know. I thought it was just different systems but same qualities. Just go with the one that takes less space! It doesn't matter which one.

Use NTSC if you live in the United States. It won't display right if you use PAL (phase alternation by line) , PAL is the standard video code for Europe, NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) is for the United states.

Just use NTSC. k? It won't display right if you use PAL, and play it  on a TV.

You should be able to watch the DVD on your computer regardless of PAL or NTSC. But like everyone's been saying PAL is for Europe (and a bunch of other places). NTSC is pretty much only used in the US and Canada (and maybe Mexico). The rest of the world uses PAL or SECAM.

The only reason I would use pal is bc it takes up 25% less space(I dont know why).. So I can fit more onto one dvd.. I am making lots of dvds, so it does make a difference.

One problem, IT WON'T PLAY!!! To fit more video's on a DVD, you need to lower the quality, and change the video format to MPEG manually.

Jesus, if his DVD player can handle PAL discs, then it can handle PAL discs. My DVD player can play PAL discs and the picture comes out fine on the screen.

If your dvd player is a region free then that means you can play any Region from any part of the world including There is 8 region which you could play Can&USA(Region 1), Europe Japan Middle-east South-Africa(region 2), Southeast Asia (Region 3), Australia and South-america(Region 4), Africa Russia and rest of Asia(Region 5), China(Region 6), Reserved(Region 7), Aircraft and ships(Region 8)

"Why does pal take up less space than ntsc if it has a higher resolution?"Pal has a different code than NTSC does I would highly recommend you to use NTSC if you want to play it over your neighbors or cousin or family's house because most dvd players do NOT support Region Free. If you would want to make your movies REGION FREE try DVD shrink3.2 , it gets rid of any region codes off any dvd you would like to make backups. Here are the instructions and download CLICK ME

There's actually ways to manipulate certain DVD players to make them region-free.

My DVD player is a standard NTSC player, I bought it knowing of a certain pattern you input on the remote to toggle the player to be region free. It was really that simple. It was fantastic. Really cheap player too. Kinda sucks arse though but whatever.

NTSC is what you use for USA, and I think Japan as well. PAL is Europe. If you want to play those DVDs on a US DVD player, you'll almost certainly need to use NTSC.

Region coding is more of a protective device, I'm pretty sure PAL and NTSC work outside of the region coding.
