It's only a problem if you're stupid enough to think that original life on Earth started as complex as modern bacteria.
------- Massive, epic adventure, multi-coloured, multi-layered. Sort of two/three dimensional Wizard of Oz for the future.

As soon as the video started talking about the origins of life on earth, I turned it off. Sorry, that's not what evolution is about.
------- Well damn!

I've always found it interesting that people assume complexity denotes an intelligent creator. There are two problems, as I see it, with this supposition. First, notions of complexity are derived from human understanding. We ascribe notions of complexity to that which we view as complex. Unfortunately, this is not a good litmus test for actually measuring somethings complexity. Many years ago, people might have considered a simple printing press the height of technology and something with a high degree of complexity. Today, while we can admire its innovation, we do not necessarily admire its complexity - especially when compared to other, more modern inventions. Therefore, notions of complexity are always changing and always subjective. What humans consider to be complex on a cosmic scale might not really be so. Secondly, in human terms, simply being complex does not imply intelligent design. Simplicity and ease of operation does. For instance, a computer is generally designed to maximize operating efficiency and ease of use for the consumer. Certainly, if the builder desired, he could just have easily made its workings more complex and the user interface more difficult to understand, but this does not make the design more intelligent. There are countless examples of inefficiency in nature. For instance, if God intended sex to only be a means of procreation, then why is it so difficult to actually conceive? Why are there so many millions of sperm and why is the chance that one might make it to the egg and actually penetrate it so small? Assuming an intelligent designer, one would also assume that if sex were intended only as procreation, that it would be possible to concieve every time you have sex. Intelligent design and argumets for and against is something I've been wanting to read more about for a while now, but I have not yet had the time to do so. Please consider this point while reading my arguments - as I'm sure they've been made before. Post edited at 7:13 pm on Oct. 21, 2006 by Nausicaa

Intelligent Design: By idiots, for idiots
It's funny how you have said in the past about being a Christian when always what you say goes against it with you insulting so many people.
You are aware that evolution and christianity ARE compatible, right? Most christians I know believe in evolution.
Anything is compatible with Christianity if you start looking at it's tenet (the Bible) as something other than literal. That's what makes the whole idea so absurd. And I mean, as an aside, if it really is the world of God, I can imagine he would speak in literal terms and not in metephore where his message is unclear, subjective, and prone to error.

The Bible is pretty straightfoward with what's right and wrong. Do not murder, do not commit adultery, and more.

If it was really the word of god, it would make sense for him to speak in metaphors and paraphrasing because he would know that cultures change over time. Speaking literally would only help bring his message to one period of time, possibly even only one culture base.
