Right, I have a 17" CRT Gateway EV730 monitor. Recently I've noticed a few horizontal lines near the very top. I looked closer and the top half inch or so is completly blac.   Under that black area for about 1-2 inches down has those lines. I notice that those lines seem to reflect images.

I can press with medium pressure on the left side-midde- top of the monitor and this all goes away. I let go of the monitor and it returns to its screwed up state.

Any ideas as to what it is?

Thanks.

I know man. Gateway blows ass. It took those bastards 5 months to send me a new monitor (the one currently dying) after the first one died!

Almost sounds like what happened to my laptop a few times.

If that's the case, the LCD is cracked.

Um, I have a CRT screen dude. Its not a flat screen. Its a TFT display for one thing. Second of all, not a laptop. On top of that a cracked screen would not cause vertical sync problems

Sounds to me like the monitor is breaking, and as it is a CRT, it is not worth fixing, if fixing it is even possible.

I think its time to buy a nice new TFT screen, they are coming down in price quite nicely, you can now pick up a 17 inch one for quite a reasonable price, and they use less than a quarter of the power (and desk space) of CRT screens.

I know. I was planning on getting a Flat Screen actually. However I decided to upgrade other components of my computer: video card, sound card, motherboard amongst other things.

My other monitor died, so I was forced to use this one with the wired screen. I think it could just be a loose wire in all efforts it may be worth repairing if it is something so simplistic. Problem is...finding someone who will analyze the problem for free.
