I have been puzzled lately and not found the answer to a question spurred by research done for another discussion.  I understand that the so called strong force as described basically in chemistry and experimented over in quantum mechanics, holds particles of like charges together ie protons, but what about neutrons which have no charge.  How can the "strong force" or normal electromagnetic forces hold them in to the nucleus of an atom when they have no charge?  I used to think a possibility was that they were caged in by the protons or somehow restricted but what about atoms like hydrogen.  In the isotope there is only one proton and one neutron, surely one proton can't "cage in" the neutron.  Another possibility is that the quarks act as a bound within the particle but how?  I have never understood this or had it explained and if someone could help I would appreciate it.

The strong nuclear force holds nuclei together. No charge is required, just a vector boson called a gluon.

I looked it up. So I was right it did have to do with a bounding at the quark and sub quark level- ie gluon.
Thanks again
