I would hardly classify Buddhism and Jainism as atheist

Unfortunately for you, the definition of atheism and its compatability with Buddhism and Jainism are not subject to your approval.

I don't think you're grasping the concept.  If you're an atheist, then everyone will ultimately die and stop existing.  At the end, there is no hope of ...well, anything.

I fully grasp the concept. You're spouting the first half of nihilism at me. I'm responding with the second.

Buddhism and Janism still believe in a higher power, I believe.

Then I suggest you learn more about things before you talk about them.

Some people like to enjoy the life they live instead of just blindly hope they get another after. Also you can be an athiest and beleave in life after death, it just means you don't beleave in God. The universe has given me enough, I will enjoy this life and not waste it worshipping something I don't see hoping in return an extra life.

Try again. They believe in principals of the universe, but not God (although there are polytheistic sects of Japanese Buddhsim, and one can worship a God and still be considered Buddhist).

Nope. They have respective enlightened beings, but they are human and not gods.

Sorry, I don't know any Buddhists that beleave in Gods generally aside from Japanese.

some buddhists beleive in Gods, if you are a purelander you can even reincarnate as a god

they've got this heirachy of realms, the hell realm where all the beings who broke the precepts are going through horrible ordeals (there are lots of different hell realms for different behaviours) then there is the animal realm, the human realm, the god realms and then there is the pureland where people go and just prepare for buddahood.

Not Gods. They're not deities. The principal of (mahayana) buddhism, is that you realize the absence of self, and thus become a higher being to help others find the path of enlightenment.

There's not god laying down laws and codes, and making things. Just realized beings.

PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD

-it feels pretty bad to be utterly useless in the universe.
-To only be created by random scientific events
-to never be truly and totally loved by any one
-to never know your set purpose and goal
-never being able to explain anything at and before the beginning of anything
-to have a gaping black hole in the core of you being... always sucking in your feeling of wholeness and purity
-to know.. no matter what you do.. you can never be forgiven

This is your fate if you don't believe in god

Not The god ( bible version) but a god.. a supreme being of some kind

Yeah, it's quite sad to me, but it's a person's choice whether they want to surrender themselves to God or not. What they choose to believe has nothing to do with me.

this whole patronising assumption that they are better off than me is what I hate most about christians - its like, I know that everyone thinks their way is best - but their self assured manner about it - it makes me want to stab their faces..

well... you would have to stab yourself then

I f you don't believe in nothing( witch is impossible... you can believe in nothing with the human brain at work 24/7)
you must believe in something

and why do you chose this belief... because( in your mind) it was better than the other choices( again in your mind

so .. go ahead..  if you stand by what you say... stab yourself

( mods I'm not threatening her... I'm just putting things in perspective)

so you

I am saying when they are so smug about it. Of course I think I am right and they are wrong but equally I don't think I am better off than them except insofar as I am right - I don't think "oh those poor christians suffer so much if only they realised there was no god, poor pitiful creatures" thats patronising shit.

ok.... i see where your coming from....

and i am a contributor to that ...

I cant help what I believe...... and I honestly believe that a belief in " one supreme being" is the best belief i can have..

I apologise to whomever I insulted.... Now that I think it over... making this topic was a mistake.... religion is one of those issues that should not be talked about

quite ostentatious remarks

-I feel that I create my own meaning, rather you are bad in this; if you are pious submit yourself to a god you abandon life.
-I suppose a god is better?
-I hate ostentatious pricks who think only gods can be pious
-I make my purpose and goals, instead of following other's
-I can't explain much, but more than you could
-I feel whole and don't believe in "purity"
-I forgive myself, I am master of my self.

and you're last statement proven ostentatious and wrong.
