I definately think it will happen again, but I usually relate to the much more recent fall of European Imperialism

Pretty much eveyone predicts a painful repetition of history. It's less an idea than a commonly accepted fact. Entropy claims all things.

Its obviously going to fall. Not in the bloody way the Romans did, but it will fall. One of the major reasons the Romans were so defenseless was that their capital was so far out of reach, that it was hard to communicate. It got too big for its own good. Well, we have the internet and telephones. The United States will still exist, but will be much like the UK in that we aren't going to be a super power or a major military force. China will soon be taking over our roll, possibly within the next 30 or 40 years.

Hmm yeah, that pretty much sums it up. China might need a few more decades, but it's getting there. Their Navy and Airforce are inferior, but they're catching up fast. I think there will be something of the effect as the cold war, or something similar between us and China. I don't think we'll exactly win the next time though. We seem to always just get lucky, you can't do that forever. Our time will come and we will fall as any other empire has just maybe not completely like you said, but we can't be on our high throne forever. Post edited at 8:01 pm on Sep. 13, 2006 by w0mp

It's not that our military is weakening, it's that China is catching up. As you stated, they have a long way to go, true. Rome didn't fall in a day either of course so I don't expect anything immediate, just the gradual decline we have been experiencing. The EU, yes I believe I can see them up there with superpower status but it will be hard because those countries still have issues between each other. They disagree alot so it has been difficult to organize between each other. If they can become more efficent to work together then I agree with you on the EU. China has been accelerating rather fast if you consider where it was 30 years ago, it has come a long way in such a short time. I agree on the U.S. being ill-prepared, I can't understand how the government can take such a chance. It's those kind of things that are gradually adding on to it's downfall
