My friend has always talked about how she eats massive amounts of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, yet she's skinny as a rail! I've always wondered how this could be. Literally, she would talk about eating a jar a day. The other day, I found out that she's been putting the peanut butter and fluff in her mouth, chewing it a little, and then spitting it out. Obviously, this is an eating disorder and she needs help, which I'm in the process of getting her. In the meantime, is there any chance that she's getting calories from this, or is she just completely starving herself?

Get her some help, that doesn't sound very helpful...

In order for her to be getting caloried from it, she has to swallow. I would be worried, if I was you.

no. you need to digest food to gain from it. tell her you are worried or refer to a doctor. help her before it is too serious to be stopped.

She may be getting very small amounts of calories, but its not nearly enough to sustaine life. You should talk to her about getting help.

It's right for you to be worried. I used to struggle with this disorder myself, among other. It's a form or Anorexia, and no she isn't getting any calories. It's very serious. How old is she? If talking to her fails, you need to tell her parents (if she is young enough to still live with them). Hang in there. I've been in your posision and I know it's hard on you. You're doing the right thing.

approach an adult friend if you have one and ask about it before deciding if you want to tell her parents.

Hiya, Good for you for realizing something is wrong, and working to get it fixed! I think meeting with a nutritionist is good, but I agree that a psychologist would also be a good step, considering eating disorders tend to have more to do with psychological effects. However, I think it would be important to bring her parents into this before you make an appointment with someone like this. If her parents don't know what she's doing, then it's also really important to tell them. In terms of your friend, try to be as supportive as possible to her. These can be really hard times, and while she might not want to talk about it, it can really help to have someone behind you. Let her know she can talk to you if she wants to, though don't force her. Good luck, and kudos to you for being such a great friend! =)
