Do you self-identify as an intellectual?

I don't. I think I'm smarter than most of my age group, but not an "intellectual." I put this in my short answer to join this forum: There are people who take that title seriously and could completely kick my ass in an argument if they disagreed with my self-identification as an intellectual.

What must someone be, in your eyes, to be considered an intellectual?

And is self-identifying as an intellectual pretentious?

Yes and no.

I think Im smarter than most people my age (just like you), but Im not "intellectual" in the way I think of it.

When I think of intellectual, I think of liking to read books, well motivated, things like that.

I just dont fit into that category.

Nope, not at all. I just think I've got a little more common sense and a more logically-oriented mind than the average human being when it comes to arguments.

I actually try to simplify things as much as possible.

A little. I know I'm smarter than most kids in my age group. Because of my book smarts? Yes...and no. Most kids in my age group have no common sense. I like to think even though I am outspoken and rather fun loving, I'd never do anything so stupid it would put myself or others in any sort of danger.

When I talk, I tend to elaborate. A lot. In high school, I wanna be on debate and I know I'll be good at it because I remember lots of things and can talk eloquently and fluidly like I'm talking to one of my girlfriends. Actually, me and my friends actually have political and religious debates all the time.

I think I'm smart, as in I'm open minded and i can defend my arguments well and persuade people. But the usual image of an intellectual is someone who is very studious, reads a lot etc.

I'm not like that.

Yes, though I try not to brag. I consider myself more intelligent than many others in my age group. Though I'm sure there are many more out there than I know of.

I'm far more intelligent than most kids my age. I've always been smart, but after doing independent studies and basically teaching myself for the last three years of high school, my thoughts have changed. I call myself a 'profound thinker'. I analyze the world rather than dismissing it as 'that's how it's always been'. I think about the 'why' behind things. But I don't call myself an intellectual.

Nah, I sometimes pretend to, when I'm smoking a cigarette and reading something like Kafka, but I'm just pissing about normally. I guess if I were more creative, I would be closer. Creativity is definitely a  big part.

Not at all. I wouldn't say I'm any more intelligent than the majority of my age group. I'm definitely more informed, but that doesn't exactly count for much.
Definr lists intelligence as "the ability to comprehend; to understand and profit from experience." By that definition, I suppose I do comprehend some things faster than many others, but that's simply because I pay attention and devote myself to the cause.

In my eyes, to be considered an intellectual, one must be pompous enough to believe that oneself is superior to others (mentally, at least). In my opinion, being considered an "intellectual" is negative.

I think that self-identifying as an intellectual is very pretentious. It's trying to take a claim of great intelligence, when in fact one is just extremely well-read.

There are people who are of superior intelligence, but I really think they are extremely rare. I definitely would not say I've met anyone here with said superior intelligence. That being said, I suppose that's good, because they seem to usually die before their teen years are up (the few cases that I have seen, this has been the case); it's probably better that they're off in the world doing things.

I won't get into my perception of intelligence, because that's off topic. But, needless to say, it's different from the "traditional" views on it.

I don't see myself as an intellectual. It's more that I am willing to put forth effort to make myself sound intelligent if the need should arise.

I would say that an intellectual was someone who consciously pursues information and knowledge and who constantly seeks situations to display what they've collected.

No, I don't.  I really have low self-esteem, so I don't like anything about myself.  I really hate myself, actually.  For one, I think I'm pretty much an idiot.  Also, I hate the way I look, and the way I think.  That's probably also why I hate it when people give me compliments.

I do consider myself to be an Intellectual. However, i don't feel that i am better than anyone else, because each human has the same capability as another. The only thing is, most humans use 10% of their brains. Geniuses use at least 15%, and the highest ever recorded was 20%. Seeing the technological advances we have made in society due to these certain Intelligent beings who use the parts of their brains we have yet to access gives me hope that one day in the near future we will use 100%. Since we have no idea yet how exactly we only use 10% of our brains, and have no access to our entire minds(including the conscious and sub-conscious mind), then we really cannot make any advances. So, I honestly consider myself to be an Intellect, but not to the degree of a Brilliant Scientist.
