Alright, I have ubuntu ultimate on my desktop. We had cable so everything was going okay and I got the usb wireless working on the desktop through ndiswrapper. So now my dad got DSL and it doesn't work. I talked to the guy at at&t about it and he told me that I couldn't use linux with DSL and I took it that he didn't know what he was talking about. I don't want to use virtual machine because it'll take forever to boot my laptop. So I did some research and to find out that I need to install pppoe point to point protocol over ethernet) package on my ubuntu desktop. I can't do it because I have no connection because it needs to communicate tot he website and get more packages. Any suggestions?

If you are using a router, and the router is configured correctly. Assuming that your wireless card/ethernet port is correctly working, the configuration would be EXACTLY the same as far as your computer is concerned.

Now if you are going directly to the modem, it will be a bit different. In that case you would need to install a PPPOE manager.

I did the whole linux thing, got frustrated with the lack of support and the bugs. It's also not very user friendly.

Not sure what the PPPOE manager in Ubuntu is, but that is what you need.

If I remember the command is something like pppoeconf.

You can use Linux with DSL.

Was your cable router provided? That was probably it. If you have a new router, you just need to reconfigure it.

Mess around with it. It will work. I have DSL and its always worked fine for me.

ya one of the steps was to use pppoeconf. it couldn't configure the devices. the cable had two routers on the network and the DSL now has just the modem with the wireless and swtich on the back. i try to connect to the router/modem by wireless and it keeps trying to get an ip address and it never connects.

Are you using an ADSL router, or a PCI ADSL card?

If you are using the latter, drivers for linux may or may not exist, and if they do exist, it may or may not be easy to set it all up. It is probably not worth the effort though if you can afford an ADSL router.

If you have an ADSL router (or another computer connects and shares its internet connection), then everything is fine, just point your computer to use that as the gateway.
