It depends if you believe in evolution or creation.

Personally, I believe in evolution.  So I think the egg came first.  Over time it evolved into a chicken, and finally, that one egg became the chicken that we have today, whereas it's parents could have had the smallest DNA difference to make them NOT chickens.

I hope that made sense.  phew

The chicken, because sometime in another animals lifetime, it began to evolve while alive. wait.. no the egg, cause the chicken evolved into a chicken while in the egg :D
