in case you do end up having babies because of an accident during "fun sex" then you can make it easier.

You do know what contraceptives are, right...?

Yes, but sometimes those fail.

When used correctly, the very worst contraceptives only have a 10% chance of failing. The easiest and most common contraceptives (hormonal birth control) have a 1-3% chance of failing. Contraceptives used in conjunction (condom + pill; spermicide + shot; etc.) have a less than 1% chance of failing.

So, really "sometimes those fail" is a horrible argument.

1% is still 1 girl out of a 100.  Think of the girls at school... how many of them are pregnant?  Very few.  Were they using protection?  Probably not, but hey, innocent until proven guilty, right?

That's not how many times any given method of contraception actually fails; it's the chance it has of failing. Frankly, 1% is a pretty small chance, and when used in conjunction with other methods, the chances go down to the point where they're not even worth mentioning.

I'm pretty sure he didn't even supply an opinion. I mean, vague platitudes, yeah. Lots. But nothing containing enough thought to actually be considered an opinion.

Actually I'm saying that you can have your beliefs and I won't hold those against you, but since you made this argument between the two of us heated, you took it in a different way, I really could care less what you think, I am being completely honest with you.  But if you can't see that you are very thickheaded.

Oh, I don't think anyone accused you of being dishonest.  Just of being a moron.

Who made it heated? I just explained why "sometimes they fail" is a horrible argument; by refusing to respond to that, you're making it seem very blatantly that you don't really have anything to back up your pseudo-opinions and are therefore running away from a good debate. I never called you dishonest, but I am calling you out on not having done your research or knowing what you're talking about.

OK so then you're calling me out.  Maybe you're right, I didn't do any research, but you just named the statistics, and therefore there really isn't anything for me to tell you to debate your point.  So, yes I am leaving the debate, because I don't see what more research I can do. I'm sorry for calling you thickheaded.

Research isn't a bad thing, you know...I suggest doing some to back up your opinions, so that this doesn't happen again.

Adverb
S: (adv) sometimes (on certain occasions or in certain cases but not always) "sometimes she wished she were back in England"; "sometimes her photography is breathtaking"; "sometimes they come for a month; at other times for six months"

Can someone please explain to me how Catalyst's initial comment "Sometimes they (birth control) fail." is bogus? Because even as her detractors have admitted, birth control methods do have a failure rate. It's just usually lower than 10 percent, assuming that said methods are used correctly.  So sometimes they DO fail.

And since when were falliable humans able to perform a technique correctly every time? Just looking around at the dregs on Golive, I wouldn't trust them to tie their own shoelaces, let alone slip on a condom or remember to take a pill on time.

Remember, an effectiveness of 1% failure rate is theoretically equivalent to one woman out of one hundred getting pregnant per year.

Operative word: Theoretically. Not the same as in practice.  You know this.

And aside from that, "Morons might fuck it up" doesn't strike me as a valid argument for not having sex outside of marriage.

So if Pill X has a failure rate of 1%, in theory 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant while on the pill. But in real life, none of them will get pregnant?

Theory may not always be completely applicable to real life, and there will be some variation, random error, human error, etc,, but I fail to understand how a method with a quantified failure rate will not fail in a similar manner in real life. The fact that said failure rate was quantified to begin with indicates that said method failed in the first place.

And aside from that, "Morons might fuck it up" doesn't strike me as a valid argument for not having sex outside of marriage.

Not just morons. Even perfectly intelligent people can fuck things up, especially if they are having sex regularly. Humans are not infalliable.
