Anyone here have EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified)? In case you're not sure what this is, people described as having EDNOS "meet some but not all of the criteria of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa". You can have a normal BMI and be classified as having EDNOS. I haven't been medically diagnosed but I believe I fit into this category. I exhibit symptoms of both anorexia and bulimia but have a normal BMI. I read online that this is typical of persons diagnosed with EDNOS. We tend to switch between eating disorders. This also includes persons who have binging episodes. The EDNOS category include disorders that do not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder. Each one of the following disorders is an example: -For females, all of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met except that the individual has regular menses. -All of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met except that, despite substantial weight loss, the individual's current weight is in the normal range. -All of the criteria for bulimia nervosa are met except that binge eating and inappropriate compensatory mechanisms occur at a frequency of less than twice a week or for a duration of less than 3 months. -The regular use of inappropriate compensatory behavior by an individual of normal body weight after eating small amounts of food (eg, self-induced vomiting after the consumption of two cookies). -Repeatedly chewing and spitting out, but not swallowing, large amounts of food. -Binge eating disorder: recurrent episodes of binge eating in the absence of the regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors characteristic of bulimia nervosa. Keel PK. Purging disorder: subthreshold variant or full-threshold eating disorder?[see comment]. [Review] [29 refs] [Journal Article. Research Support, N.I.H., Extramural. Review] International Journal of Eating Disorders. 40 Suppl:S89-94, 2007 Nov. (THE DUKE MED CTR LIBRARY HAS THIS TITLE; CHECK FOR HOLDINGS) UI: 17868124 Authors Full Name Keel, Pamela K. OBJECTIVE: To review evidence of the clinical significance, distinctiveness, and prevalence of a newly characterized form of eating disorder not otherwise specified, purging disorder (PD). METHOD: Articles were identified by computerized and manual searches. RESULTS: PD is a clinically significant disorder of eating that does not appear to differ meaningfully in severity from bulimia nervosa (BN). Preliminary evidence supports the distinctiveness of PD from BN, but no studies have directly examined PD in comparison with anorexia nervosa (AN). Epidemiological studies indicate that PD affects between 1.1 and 5.3% of young adult women in their lifetimes, reflecting lifetime prevalence rates comparable with those for AN and BN. CONCLUSION: More research on PD is needed, particularly with regard to etiology, treatment, course, and outcome. Such work would be greatly facilitated by standardization of the syndrome's definition. (c) 2007 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

interesting... well ive been purging for 4 years now and obsessing over my weight for 5. im sure more than 5% of young women would be diagnosed with this if it were to be named as an ED.
