Study 1:
"Will Women Soon Outrun Men?" was the title of the letter published in the prestigious "Scientific Correspondence" section of the January 2, 1992 issue of the journal Nature. The letter was submitted by Drs. Brian Whipp and Susan Ward of the UCLA School of Medicine, who, based on observations of world record track times from early 1900s to 1992, boldly concluded that "...unless the progression rate of men's records increases relative to that of women, then [the mean velocity] for these events will be no different for men and women within the first half of the twenty-first century... Beyond that time, current progression rates imply superior performance by women.

Study 2:
Andrew J. Tatem of the University of Oxford and his colleagues collected the finishing times in the men's 100-meter dash run in 1900 and from 1928 (when the women's race was first run) to 2004. The winning times for both genders have been steadily decreasing, with female competitors improving at a slightly faster clip than the males. By plotting the results against the year of competition and extrapolating the results, the team determined that the fastest human on the planet could be a woman after the 2156 games. In today's issue of the journal Nature, they report with a 5 percent margin of error that the event could take place as soon as 2064 or as late as 2788, however.

Nope, I doubt it. Their inferrence is that, because women are increasing faster than men are, they will overtake men. However, you should also figure that women have traditionally had less chances than men to excel and have free time, etc, so that as the opportunities of women and men begin to equal out, so will their performance increase rates.

I really don't agree with that at all. They're times are decreasing because we have more women competing in general. In 1928 no respectable middle class woman would be a runner. That'd be unheard of. Nowadays, it's a much wider scope, and because that scope is wider, your chances of a good runner popping up are higher.
