i'm going to college next year, and i'm thinking of joining one. so i have some questions:

1. do they take everyone?
2. if not, what do you have to do to get in? how do they go about selecting people?
3. pretty much the same question as number 2. what are their standards/requirements to get in? anything crazy?

It depends almost entirely on the frat you're going after. Their requirements will range anywhere from three weeks of auditions to just walking in the door. Try asking around whether people have heard what you'll have to do. You can always contact the frat itself.

I have not chosen to join a fraternity, so perhaps someone else will give you more of an insiders view of what it takes to join, but I know the process somewhat, Greek life being quite prevalent on campuses.

No, your entry is not guaranteed.  During rush week usually, you can become a pledge of a fraternity, and then there is a certain period of time before they decide which people that have still stuck around get inducted.  I am not sure what the requirements during this time are, though they vary between organizations, but hazing is against policy at every university so you should not have to worry about physical abuse, though many of them can still be very selective.

I doubt that a fraternity would have written requirements for physical attributues, but like anything in life, this could play an underlying role depending on the judgment of whoever is deciding your fate.

These days, fraternities are very philanthropy-oriented, so I wouldn't be surprised to have to be involved in some sort of charity event, though of course social involvement amongst the frat is still important.

Joining a fraternity can be a rewarding but expensive experience, which defines many students' stay in college.  You will meet many people and be involved in many activities that will benefit you socially and academically, however there are still many ways to get involved on campus without joining a greek organization if none of them feel quite right for you, or if the concept of being so institutionalized into one group doensn't suit you.

Frats don't take anyone When you go to try to win a bid, just be very social and remember: you are going into the lion's den so ass kissing is a given.

Joining a frat is a great opportunity to make some close-knit friendships just remember to pick the frat thats right for you. If you are the party type join the party fraternity. If you are more for academics, join that one.

Frats offer a lot of advantages and help you become well-rounded, just don't fall into becoming the stereotypical frat boy like some guys. Every Greek group has requirements - scholastic requirements ( for example, you may be required to have a certain gpa ) and something to show that you're well-rounded, have contributed to your community, or have been a leader in some way - basically something that shows you have character.

I'm in a sorority (one of the biggest in the world ) and my campus has a few of the largest frats so I assure you my info is reliable!

Be nice to the guys, but don't seem like a kiss ass. Play up your accomplishments - all they really want is to look good and that's achieved by having successful members.

I am in a Fraternity (looks at signature).  At my campus, we are know for not being your typical 'frat guys' but, some organizations are less concerned about that.  Just make sure you chose a house where you'll fit in, one with people that you can trust.  I'm not going to lie, some house may have less-than-honorable reputations on campus, so you'll meed to take that into consideration, because even though it is illegal, hazing sometimes can happen.   But most likely not, and you'll meet hundreds of people in the Greek system (which can in turn turn into connections for jobs), so overall, it is a valuable experience, for sure.
