I want to start out with a free webhost and a subdomain, so I did some research and chose http://www.freehostia.com/ for the time being till I get the hang of it, and can confidently purchase an actual domain and better host.
I'm trying to set up the ftp and the MySQL in freehostia...and it's just acting fucktarded...errors left and right :-(
Can you recommend me a free host that...works?

That's because you probably set-up a wordpress.com blog, not the one on wordpress.org which you have to host.
