You think people with mental disorders are stupid? Pull your head out of your ass. Many great minds had mental disorders and I'm fairly certain they are/were far smarter than you will ever be.

I have APD (I won't say the full name since too many people think it means something else) and schizophrenia.

There is a sticky on this subject at the top of the forum.

I am not disabled, but my sister has Down's syndrome and I work with disabled young people.

I have FOP, doesn't mean I'm not smart.

I hate when people assume you have nothing going for you just because you have a disability.

Btw, I don't think autism should be classed as a disability.

It's not, and I kind of find it offensive.

Perhaps the 'milder' forms of autism aren't particularly disabling, but it can be.

How many kids do you know with autism?

No form of autism is disabling.

Bad parenting perhaps, but not autism itself.

Quite a lot... I would say as a guess at least ten, most of them severely autistic.

I don't believe that the problems autistic children have are due to bad parenting, and I don't believe that autism is not a disability.

What? My cousin has severe autism and simply cannot function on his own. At all.

Fair enough if you think classing autism as a disability is offensive, but I find you blaming bad parenting as a cause for it being disabling offensive. Just wow.

How many kids do you know with autism?

Roughly 30, raging from almost mld to sld and most points in between.

No form of autism is disabling.

How do you define "disabling"? I'd say people with learning disabilities (especially children) are the most vunerable group of people on the planet.

If a disability is a "condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual of their group" (here) then I'd say asd is a disability.

I can't quite see why labelling someone who is severely autistic as 'disabled' is offensive. I can perhaps see the reason the point is being made if it refers solely to people with mild autism... maybe.

Agreed.

If we're going to take a word, and use it literally, then I'd say almost everyone with mild depression to living in a vegetitive state is mentally retarded.

Have a good night, sir.
