actually it is a lot of hte time unless the thief knows what he's doing. If its just some nigger that is busting your window open to open ur trunk to see if theres anything to steal, it will scare him off. Now if its a car thief or someone  that is somewhat intelligent, he will probably pop the hood and disconnect the battery. I don't think any thief will just ignore the alarm. When i eventually get an alarm (just spent 700 on a sub/amp alone) i will get the self powered alarms.
