When you listen to [classical] music, can you just listen, or are you constantly wondering what key it's in or what the meter is, or when it changes, stuff like that? I realized earlier that every time I listen to Classical I'm constantly analyzing the music.

[mostly directed towards music geeks]

I play some Bach on bass and sometimes I wonder what in the world was going on in his head when he was writing the song. What made him think that after the 5th he'd go to the 2nd then to the 4th and then to the 6th........  I always check to see the the time signature is too

If it's by any of my favourite composers (mostly baroque stuff: Pepusch, Telemann), then yes, I often find myself analysing it and trying to work out things about it. Also, I've played a heck of a lot of their pieces and so I'm always spotting similarities.

I do find myself analysing most pieces in some way, though.

I immediately try to the composer, but I am often more concerned with the orchestration than the harmonic progression. In short, I rarely listen without analyzing.

I try and just listen. Listen to the story the song has to tell. Occasionally, I'll analyze. But not very often.

It's hard for me to just listen.  I play violin and bass, so I'm always hearing the different parts, hearing how each layer interacts.  If I've played it, I'm remembering the hand positions, the fingerings, the bowings, the dynamics...Listening to classical music tends to be a pretty involved thing for me.
