Many people, for a living, and just for fun interpret their dreams. There are websites all over the place that take symbols as part of your life. For example, an umbrella is supposed to be a symbol for sex in a dream.

Dream Interpretation Website

My question to you:
Can dreams really be interpreted, do they mean anything, and should we act differently based upon them?

I will post my opinion if this topic gets interesting.

I think they mean absolutely nothing.  Yes, of course the reflect our desires, needs, and fears.  This, by no means means that they are an indicator of things to come, or intended paths that we take.  They're thoughts and images collected throughout the day that have no where to go, so they link together in strange ways.

It's the Alexandrian-gnostic allegorizing of scripture, looking for deeper meaning when reality is insufficient or unsatisfactory in your opinion.

Depends hwo you look at it....

If you go witht he Freud theory, basically all of our dreams are about sex and agression.

On the entirely different end of the spectrum...you've got the activation synthesis theory.

This says that dreams are the result of random electrical brain impulses that pull imagery from experience stored in the memory. These images don't form the stories that we remember as our dreams. Instead, our waking minds, in trying to make sense of the imagery, create the stories without our even realizing it -- simply because the brain wants to make sense of what it has experienced.

I like the last one...just cuz I think it's a cool concept

I agree that dreams can be a representation of certain aspects of one's life, but disagree with interpreting dreams as any indication of the future. I think it's been fairly well established that dreams can occur in situations of stress, desire, or any strong emotion constantly affecting someone. It's also widely accepted that there are certain techniques to influence one's dreams and sleep in general. So, I think dreams/reality have only a credible on way street: reality can present itself in dreams, but dreams can not be 'interpreted' as generalizations to represent reality accurately.

I don't think you can foresee your future this way... but I do think it's a good way to figure out your hopes, dreams, and even fears. Many people like to ignore what their minds are saying so the sub conscience steps in at night and tells you through your dreams.

Dreams only show you what you know, not something that you're unfamiliar with, which is why I don't think you can actually foresee your future.

It's so ironic... or possibly a God-send that you posted this. Today I officially started my dream journal.  I think a person's dreams can mean much more than anything we can imagine. I feel like God talks to me in my dreams or uses them to reach me in some way or another.  I think someone's dream or dreams can speak to them on different levels once they look at it from another perspective.  Rebecca, the lady that runs the small church group I attend, thinks I have prophetic dreams.  Some of the things I've told her in my dreams really jump out at her and she sees it as God's way of communicating with me.  I know it may sound silly to those that don't believe in God or those that were raised in a strict religious setting, but I think is true. Joseph, who is often deemed King of Dreams, was given dreams that meant something from the Lord.

Switching subjects....
My main question though, with dream interpretation, is how do we KNOW one thing represents another for sure? Like how do we know an umbrella equals sex or whatever. Who came up with the "this equals this." to begin with?

Of course dreams are symbols of things, but only sometimes. Dreams are a result of your sub-conscious mind replaying events over the day and producing the images in your brain of those you have sub-consciously thought about the most that day without consciously knowing it. Some of these images create symbols in your mind, which your sub-conscious mind indicates as the object in question and displays the images in either a fast or slow-paced two or three dimensional figure. Therefore, dreams almost seem like reality and may take the place of a symbolical figure in your life. An umbrella could mean sex because of course, in sex, some use protection(an umbrella protects you from the rain) and, as in most cases of sex, you and your partner get wet(as an umbrella would.) So yes, i think dreams to sometimes symbolize those important matters in your life that you have yet to discover in your conscious, waking mind.

Well, it depends. I normally don't have dreams, but when I do, they're pretty odd. Sometimes they're cool. But, sometimes, I have a dream and forget about it and then later (maybe that day, next week, or even years later) a situation occurs in my real life that is exactly like my dream.

The weird part is that lately, the dream has even included me realizing that I had previously dreamt this situation. And it even includes my reaction to this realization. And, these occurences are getting longer in duration. It's really odd, but I think that dreams sometimes do mean something.

It hasn't helped me pass a test, yet, though

To go with what motorhead said, I have had dreams where I've been in the same dream, dreamt the same thing, but Its like I decide to change on action in it. Instead of a right, I take a left, instead of saying no, I say yes, etc.

I don't think you can see the future and whatnot, but I do think that you can get a better idea of what you're thinking, sometimes.

For example, last night I had a dream that I may or may not post about in a minute, but anyway, it included 2 (among many other) things: rose-coloured warnings on LW for people who've been extra-nice and a striking similarity to the computer game Black and White. I was thinking about B&W the other day and thought that it would be cool to play it again and also I sent a message to a member saying how fabulous her ehelp responses are, so in that situation I'd have issued a rose-coloured warning. It's basically what I'm thinking about at the time.

I think that things like that are pretty common. I don't buy all the symbolism stuff ('dreaming of blue shows that you are hopeful for the future' and whatnot) but I do think that some things can mean others (like dreaming about losing your teeth showing a bad self-image).

I tend to think that dreams can have a deeper meaning, though they don't always. Dreams tend to be a combination of random firings in the brain and sights and sounds from your everyday life that you try to rearrange so that the feelings your brain thinks are real make sense (e.g. you dream you're being chased when your brain feels like you're running). I think that dreams often can have a deeper meaning, and can give insight into things you may not realize about your own life.

An example...this past week, I had no fewer than five dreams over the course of three days that involved me going on vacation. It was (and is) pretty clear to me that something (my subconscious, God, who knows?) was telling me that I need a break from my very stressful job (which has been consuming my life).

I don't really think that dreams can foretell the future, but I do honestly think that they often provide insight into our waking lives.

I don't see why dreams would "mean" any more than anything else "means" something. Dreaming, thinking, observing...in my opinion none is better than the others at "meaning" something unapparent.

I really don't think that every dream means something. I sort of sit on the fence on this topic, because I know that some dreams mean things, and more often will make you see or think a way that you haven't before, but you shouldn't judge every dream. Sometimes they relate to something that happened or was said that day. Like yesterday, my dad mentioned how one of our friends would be able to help me, except for that he died. That night, I had a dream that I was dreaming he came back to life, and was there for one day.

Of course I don't think that has anything to do with the future, or has something to do with my life.

But then there are those dreams when you dream about someone who you have feelings for. I've also had one of these, In this dream, she broke up with her boyfriend for me. I know this wouldn't make too much sense, but after waking up and thinking it out, I realized that it was time for me to let go because she was happy. So I told her about my dream, and that was that.

It all really depends on the dream.

Dreams can be used to find out for yourself how you really feel; interpreting what you dream and how you feel during dreams can show this. But two people are needed for this to be reliable and accurate: you and a trained therapist.

Pretty much all dreams are associative. Using exceedinglyrare's example, if you're stressed and you associate going on holiday with being "un-stressed", then you might dream about going on holiday and enjoying it.

Dream interpretation websites are bullshit because they allow no room for you to express your thoughts and feelings in a constructive manner.

To answer RachLeigh13's question, there's no such thing in dream analysis as "this equals fear and so you're afraid, this equals anger so you're angry" etc.
