Start with Ubuntu and get a Knoppix live disc. Knoppix is really good.

linux is an operating system futuremodelcandance. try downloading suse linux, ubuntu, or slaxware (live cd versions). burn it to a cd from the .iso file. buy a linux book and read it. or you could go online and learn that way. everyone prefers a different distro of linux (i'm down with ubuntu ultimate and suse linux)

I'd defiantly start with Knoppix, it runs right off the CD so you don't have to go through the install which can be a bitch if you've never done it before, plus you can't really screw anything up that bad.

ohhh also make sure it support ntfs. it'll have ntfs-3g or something else in it. so you can write to the filesystem.

Ubuntu is pretty easy for new users. And in response to jamescoleman...the newest version of Ubuntu has support for ntfs without any addons. So if you have a dual boot computer with windows and a linux distro, you can access your windows files through ubuntu.
