I used to be an anorexic. See, my name. I wish I could change it, not sure how, but anyway, I used to go to pro anorexia sites every day, every hour, I probly have been to every pro anorexia website there is, I don't anymore, because I am recovered, and I dont judge the ones who do.
------- You think its tough seeing my scars? Try being the one who makes them.

the pro-eating disorder movement originally came about so people with eating disorders who were active in their eating disorder could get support in an environment where people understood and wouldn't judge them. it wasn't made for encouragement, and 'pro' stood for 'pro-active' not 'pro' as in 'for'. 'pro-active' meaning they are not currently ready to recover, but need a safe place to talk about their issues in an environment which practices harm-reduction. now those places have been completely turned around into breeding grounds for wannarexics/crash dieters. a lot of people with eating disorders don't feel comfortable in those places anymore, since most people who post on those sites are ignorant to eating disorders because they don't have one themselves, they are 'ana' which is entirely different from anorexic by the way, therefore they don't see the damage they are causing when they tell others with actual eating disorders, to 'think thin' and encourage them in their eating disordered behaviours. most people with real ed's can generally see how disgusting such people are for making a mockery out of a serious mental illness, but sadly there are a few eating disordered people out there who get sucked into the idea that eating disorders are a lifestyle rather than a life threatening disease, which goes along with the denial aspect of ed's, and only makes matters worse for them. personally, i think support groups for eating disorders and pro-active ed groups are a great idea, but pro-ana sites are incredibly dangerous. not only for those who are genuinely suffering from an ed, but also for impressionable teenagers and society in general --- in my opinion, pro (for)-ana sites help circulate the common idea that eating disorders are a fad, phase, crash diet or lifestyle by allowing non-eating disordered individuals join and then supporting them in their mission to try to either develop an ed, or use an ed as a quick way to lose weight. this then leads to the misconception that this is what an eating disorder is, when it couldn't be further from the truth. you can't catch or develop an eating disorder by copying those behaviours, and eating disorders aren't a diet/quick way to lose weight. it's just dangerous all round really. nobody would wish to have cancer so they could drop a few pounds, so why an eating disorder? if such people invaded cancer-support forums in the hope of learning to imitate the life of a cancer sufferer in order to lose weight or get attention, we would all be sat here feeling absolutely appauled. I completely understand why people make and visit pro-ana websites.. I mean I've been there myself before. But, they don't help in the slightest and to be honest with you I think they are really selfish the people who write them because they are sharing their self-hatred with others so they will hate themselves too. I don't think I could live with the fact that maybe i could have ruined someones life by making a site like that. Also, it makes stereotypes of anorexics and people start to think that they know what it would be like.. which they don't unless they've been through it. I'm really against educating about anorexia even if it is in a positive way because i think it gives people and ideas. If i could stop one person from going through the hell of anorexia then it would be a huge achievement because believe me it would be the biggest regret of your whole life. It may seem like a bit of a joke now and something that doesn't really matter but when you can't sit down cos your so scared of putting on weight- thats when you'll realise that there's no going back.
