You can't estimate just like that. It depends on the resolution of the camera, as well as how the camera processes the information and how well it compresses the data into JPG, and the quality of the picture. My D40 estimates 281 photos, with one 6MP fine photo weighing at 3.4MB but a normal photo (still at 6MP) at 1.8MB (max capacity of ~534). In comparison a RAW image will be ~7.1MB in size maxing out capacity at 134 photos on a 1GB card.
