idiots.

The size of the "explosion" and supposed black hole will be smaller than an oxygen molecule and will die it faster than the human eye can see.

it is in a VACUUM, and black holes run off of energy, and an exorbitant amount at that. Anyone who really thinks that this proton-accellerator is going to, or is able to destroy the planet is a complete ass-hat in the ways of science.

If you read up on the theory and the actual hypotheses, you might all change your minds.

In all likelihood, nothing will come of this.
there are a few hypotheses however of what MIGHT happen in order for us to get some data:

1) black hole- a few microns in diameter, dieing out in a few nanoseconds. this will prove to us just WHAT black holes are made of, or at least show us how to study them

2) gain of energy - this will help us to better understand M-theory, and quantum effects of proton collision

3) loss of energy - help us to better understand gravity and the fabric of the space-time continuum.

there are a few others, none of which are: "this will destroy the world". C'mon now, and you wonder why no one tells the public anything, ignorance may be bliss on paper, but in practice, ignorance yields mass hysteria.

You guys talk as if you know everything, it could possibly blow up the earth. Reason why we haven't met aliens is because they probably blew themselves up with a particle accelerator before we did.

I don't think it will blow up the earth (my other post was a joke) but you sound like a total asshat here. They are smashing 2 protons together to find more info about quarks and how it might be related to the big bang. They really don't know what these "quarks" are so they can be potentially dangerous. So don't think "OMG THEY ARE FUCKING PHYSICS GENIUS, JUST LOOK AT THIER HYPOTHESES NOTHING WILL HAPPEN".

Thats not what I am saying.

First, Physicists have already created mini-black holes, so right there that throws out about a dozen of these apocalyptic ideas.

Second, smashing to protons together is nothing new. Have you ever heard of CERN, or project Alpha?
I've had the privilege to speak with the director of that project, and asked him about the dangers of what they do --which is smashing hydrogen atoms [protons] together to create anti-hydrogen [or antimatter] and building diamagnetic traps to encase them in so that we might be able to study antimatter.

Unless you, yourself, are a particle physicist --or any physicist for that matter-- I think you should leave the judgments up to the professionals. They are not going into this blind saying "well, I didn't do any math on this, but who cares, its gonna be real sweet huh?!"

Grow up, please.

They aren't creating ANOTHER big bang, they are seeing how the tiny particles of matter and energy react under certain conditions that could shed light on how the big bang might have progressed.

Don't just assume that because some idiots say there is trouble that there actually is.

considering the big bang never happened, this is just absurd!

Considering there is no better scientific theory, yes it did! And it doesn't recreate the Big Bang, they just dumbed it down for idiots.

creationism

The scientific theory of the Big Bang makes a heck of a lot more sense than someone's god floating above us piecing together a world in a week.

The bible only holds truth for the people that follow the specific religion of christianity.  In scientific circles, and other religious circles, it is simply another book.

Science will out-prove a religious text any day.

typical, the bigest explosion ever, and we have to recrate it. not only that, it could form a black hole. god us humans are idiots

The CERN accelerator is expected to accelerate protons to 1e-6c, or about 299.79 m/s.  They will each have 7e12 eV worth of energy.  The amount of energy the LHC will produce is about equal to the amount of energy it'd take to heat up 2,000 liters of coffee.

On the other hand, the energy let off by the Big Bang was in the neighborhood of 10e33 eV, or the Planck energy.  Nowhere near the amount needed to "recrete" the "bigest explosion ever."

The LHC may produce microscopic black holes, but these will be smaller than most subatomic particles, and therefore of no consequence.  Unless generations of physicists are wrong, any black holes created will evaporate in a puff of Hawking radiation in a matter of seconds.

The only people scared by the LHC are those who do not understand the underlying physics.

Well, there you go.  Suffice it to say, if the LHC was as dangerous as the paranoid skeptics said it was, it would be built on the moon or something, not on the surface of the Earth.

Edited to clarify- Who cares if it would work or not? If it works and the world goes boom we'll all be dead to care anyways.

Plus I think it'd be cool to get sucked into a black hole, tbh. Probably painful, but cool.
