People in general should be able to speak english... It's pretty much how the world communicates with itself...

Hardly
It has the most "speakers" if you include people who've done the local equivalent of you doing Spanish for a year.

But counting those actually fluent in it (being very lenient in your definition of fluent), there's less than 400 million English speakers by most estimates. Compared to around 800 million Mandarin speakers

I agree with Bud on this.

Sure, but we can't expect people to just pick it up overnight either.

You can expect them to have at least a reasonable grasp of the language before they arrive.

i wish they would. this includes not only  spanish speakers but ones from the carebean as well. I cant stand the way jamacains speak and they dont bother to learn proper english because they think they speak English already. WRONG! If i hear "gwan" one more time i might go insane.

So, not only should people be forced to learn English, they should be forced to learn English the way YOU perceive it to be correct?

The way I speak English is probably very different from how you speak it, if I were to move to the U.S - should I have to drop all the regional variations of my language to suit how you speak?

The other poster was talking about people who do speak English but retain certain bits of regional patois like 'gwan'. And there's no need to swear at me.

Those other labels are because they sell their products in more than one country. Do you want companies to waste time and money printing special American-only labels just so you don't have to look at other languages?

What is so offensive about languages other than English that even SEEING them on labels annoys you? How ridiculous.

Also, Mexican isn't a language

I have no problem with a few words but they way they speak(at least the ones nearby) is like what Tdayr mentioned. they can speak like that all they want. but when they do and expect me to know what the heck they are saying, its really annoying.

And i dont see the problem in people learning the dominant language of a country before moving there. it helps them to communicate better and less advantage can be taken of them.

No. We have no national language. It would be great if everyone was able to understand each other, but insisting that people learn English is basically getting rid of part of their heritage.

Either way... English was not hard to grasp for most people I've spoken to (but it depends on your native language).
