Yes. It's our primary language...I'm not going to go to Spain or anything and demand they learn my language. I would have to learn theirs.

No. I don't think that breaking down language diversity is desirable. My tribe's mother tongue was violently stolen, nearly eradicated without any debate.

Should everyone in america speak english (including all illegals and citizens)? I understand that english is a hard language to grasp but everyone should know at least enough to communicate. It would make a lot of things easier. What do u think?

The US has no official language.

Well, I don't mind if people speak Spanish, or any language for that matter, but since English is the official language of the U.S, everyone should speak it.  Our ancestors had to drop their language and learn it, so why can't new immigrants do the same?

Yes, for the most part.

But we should be able to speak whatever else we want, too. I get extremely irritated by people who bitch when we don't speak English in public, even if it's in a private conversation.

They have every right in the world not to learn English if they're residents or citizens of the United States, but they shouldn't expect the rest of the US to accomodate for them by making their documents, services, etc. also available in their language.  I can't tell you how annoying it is to be working at the pizza place I work at and have customers ask "habla espanol??" and request for somebody who can speak Spanish.  While I know enough that I'd be able to take these peoples' orders, I refuse to simply for the fact that if you expect something like a service in the US, you should only expect it if you use the lingua franca, which is what the service would be available in (English, in this case).

It'd be as if I went to Mexico and demanded for service in English and refuse to speak Spanish. It's arrogant and rude, not to mention quite ridiculous.

English is the primary language of education, government, and commerce here. Yes, everyone in the US should be proficient in English.

Don't you think it'd be pretty difficult to function as a resident/citizen if the government could only communicate with you in English?

*and you were exercising your right to not speak English.

Of course it'd be very difficult, but it isn't the government's job to make sure that everybody speaks English.  Those who can't speak English always have the option of getting a translator to translate what was necessary for them if they wished, but they should not expect the government to offer them a translator at no charge to them.  They're free to speak whatever language they want and refuse to learn whatever language they want, but in the United States, the lingua franca is English, so if you don't know English, you can't expect the society to cater to your inability to speak it.
