Yes, they were a huge cultural phenomenon and I actually like them quite a bit, but some people put them on a pedestal. On technical and musical merit overall they really weren't as brilliant as say Eric Clapton or Hendrix or Zeppelin or really alot of their contemporaries.

Kickass band no doubt, I love the Beatles. But they were more of a culture shock. Alot of the artists of the time weren't really shocked or in admiration of the Beatles. They just considered the Beatles a pop-culture band that hit big while there were many other big artists out there revolutionizing guitar etc.

I agree with every word you just said.

The Beatles are great, but come on, they arent the most amazing thing ever. Especially since most people dont even know a ton of their work.

Being great isn't about being musically proficient. If it was, Stanley Jordan would be legendary. Instead, he's just a cult jazz icon.

I agree. I LOVE the Beatles, and can listen to them for hours. They were BIG..but nothing that was really amazing. No spectacular guitar riffs, drum solos, or anything like that. They were just there. Amazing songwriting though!

Actually, given the times, they were rather advanced in their music. Of course, they didn't have a huge sound....but that wasn't them.

On a technical and musical merit, they defined a generation in music, and they pushed the bass to pretty damn good levels. They introduced the sitar to pop music, as well as other cultural influences. You can't say that they weren't as technical or as musically inclined as Zeppelin or any of the others just because they didn't sound the same, or they just seemed to be "pop".

Have you ever listened to Revolver? That one album defines their musical genious, and shows just how amazing the band was...

early on the beatles were not that brilliant ill give you that, but as they went on it got much better. (Rocky Racoon, A day in the life, while my guitar gently weeps, let it be etc.)

Please don't even compare Led Zeppelin to The Beatles.

Led Zeppelin stole half of their lyrics, riffs, and songs from 1920's and '30s blues legends and didn't even credit them.
The Beatles wrote their own shit.

Yeah, I've got like over 200 songs from them on my Ipod. Even though some of them have duplicates I need to scrap. I think they only made 194.

I'm actually sort of curious what it was that got The Beatles to be in the position they were. I mean, bands like The Kinks and The Who etc. feel like they could have just as easily been The Beatles of the 60s if The Beatles hadn't taken that throne.

The Beatles had songs written for them at times.

Lennon wrote the majority of the songs, but I remember reading of him looking over a song sent to him by his producers and him saying "It's shite, send it to *such and such* person, he'll take it" and the quote was a guy from said band thanking Lennon for the only hit he ever had.

EDIT: In fact, Lennon really disliked or had no emotions towards alot of their early works. He said alot of it was generic love songs that he really didn't have much emotional investment in. It was only later that he started writing songs he cared about, especially in the Plastic Ono Band.

The Beatles, to put their success simply, were accepted by both the media and the public at the same time, which is something that hasn't ever been reproduced (to the same extent). In some ways, it was just luck...but mostly, they were just a very talented and charming group.

They have such a massive history, it's simply amazing. The music they created (well, Paul and John created), was easily approachable, to pretty much everyone. The Who had an edge to them, and their sound wasn't nearly as easy to get into as The Beatles. The Kinks are overshadowed by The Beatles, but in all fairness, The Kinks (to me, of course) just weren't as good. Don't get me wrong, I love The Village Green album and a lot of their songs, but The Beatles were just so accepted in their time that that's how it all started.

When they finally stopped touring and became a studio band, that's when their music took off, and it wasn't just about the pop sound anymore. They explored their music, and took it to places that no one had ever tried to take it. The Beatles were innovators, and they were truly one of the best bands to ever come into the world...there will never be anyone as successful as they were, nor will there be another band that has such a lasting appeal.

Well...I guess you can't say never, but, it's highly unlikely with how things are now.

I figure thats because of what I wrote a sec ago, Lennon and co. may not have been as creatively into the music in the early years.

While my Guitar Gently Weeps and Rocky Racoon were definitly excellent songs though. Good choices to show their progression.
