hey guys, due to the massive amoutn of media attention this is getting, I've opted to take down most of this post since it includes my personal views and I cannot in any way speak for the group of students as a whole, nor do I wish this account to be linked to my life at college. Our demands are: 1. Re-establishment of Dean of Multicultural Affairs position (as stipulated from the Cole Agreement), in addition to the already-existent Presidential Assistant for Diversity position. 2. Creation of four new positions for full-time faculty in African-American, Latino/a, Asian, Native American (ALANA), and Queer Studies. 3. Transparency in the process by which adjunct faculty become permanent faculty. 4. Re-evaluation of the Multiple Cultural Perspectives academic requirement. 5. Mandatory anti-oppression trainings for faculty, staff, Public Safety, and Residential Life staff and interns. 6. Stability in financial aid packages. If a student's needs do not change, then the package must remain the same over the course of the student's time at the college. Further, a student's ability to register for classes will not be hindered by holds or other issues related to financial aid status. 7. Institutionalized funding for the Cultural Center, SOURCE groups, Queer Community Alliance (QCA) groups, and Women's Center. Identity-based groups will be exempt fro the process of "group recognition" each semester. 8. Permanent staffing at the Cultural Center, Women's Center, and Queer Community Alliance. Creation of a new staff position at the Cultural Center to be filled by an individual experienced in addressing the needs of international students. 9. Establishment of at least one residential hall designated for students of color, in the dorms, by Fall 2008. 10. Designation of a Queer-Identified (and not just Queer-Friendly) residential hall in the dorms. 11. Allocation of funds to expand library and media resources relevant to Third World Studies and students. 12. Immediate hiring search, for which a committee will be formed with students for whom this position is intended to serve, for a new staff member in health services with the goal of hiring this person within one year. Person must provide some kind of concrete experience/qualifications for relating to students of color, international students, queer students, trans students, and female students. 13. Guaranteed permanent identity-based housing on campus. Aggressive recruitment of students of color, international students, queer students. 14. For Hampshire to live up to its current plan of responsible investment, keeping with historical precedent of divestment from South Africa, we demand that Hampshire should cut financial ties with countries that occupy and practice racial apartheid. 15. Establishment of a comprehensive racial harassment policy to be outlined in Non Satis Non Scire. 16. Creation of a position in Institutional Advancement geared towards raising funds that specifically address issues of diversity on campus. 17. Closing of the college on Columbus Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day hold a campus-wide teach-in on racism and imperialism. Post edited at 1:40 pm on Mar. 31, 2008 by snowfish

Sounds like you are trying to further segregating the student body by assinging housing based on color, creed, or sexuality.

The days off sound awesome but the apartheid sounds a little much. Whatever floats your boat, though. Three separate boats, of course. One for the blacks, one for the whites, and one for the queers.

:( I'm afraid that as a queer of mixed heritage I'mnot sure where I'd be.
You can swim. Unless you're disabled. Which would actually be awesome. If you were black, white, female, gay and disabled you'd be the most politically correct creature on Earth.

Good direction but I have to wonder if you are not trying to solve all the world's problems (so to speak) all at once. All of the points are relevant but it's unrealistic to think that all the demands will even be entertained, let alone worked toward by the administration. I'd suggest trimming it down to a less unwieldy size, keeping the most important. Some f'r isntances: #10...unless i misunderstand it, it could create a gay ghetto and shine a spotlight on some students who would prefer it otherwise. If it would be entirely voluntary, that's anotehr matter, but I suspect it would be way down on priorities for the Admin. #9- they tried segregation decades ago and it didn't work out so well. On the other hand, this approach is similar to one barely adopted by the Toronto public school board, and they DID pass- by one vote- a resolution to create an "Afro-centric" school in Toronto for black students. Anyone can attend...as long as they are of "african" heritage. The black community in Toronto appeared to be slpit about 60-40 against but the board carried it. #17- won't happen. It's an enormous cost each day, probably tens of thousands of dollars of lost productivity each time. If it's not madated by law, it won't happen. (Isn't MLK Day a holiday as it is down there?) One note on #7: At the University I work at, similar groups are funded partially by the Admin, partially by provinical gov't grants and largely by the Student Federation . (I htink you call them Student Unions there)

thanks for reading it so thoroughly and responding. We've been in negotiations with the admins all week over these demands, and although they are tough, we've already gotten them to agree to many and we're working on the rest -the walkout is one of our larger forms of pressure on the admins, but we have more up our sleeve if it comes down to it. As to 9 and 10, we already have voluntary students of color housing for older students, but none in the freshman dorms. Since the freshman dorms are hotbeds for incoming white students who have never had to consider their own privilege and racism, I think it's necessary for the administration to protect safe spaces on campus, especially where students go to bed at night, that is guaranteed not to be a place of white oppression. Likewise, we have a 'queer friendly' hall in the dorms that I lived in last semester. It was totally voluntary, but the problem with it being a 'friendly' hall was that many straight students who never asked to be there were put on to fill up space. I wanted to be on a queer hall so that I wouldn't have to explain 'when I decided to be gay' 'how lesbians have sex', or have to face heteronormativity or even homophobia in my home. The administration needs to address this issue too and ensure that if a place is designated as a queer safe space, that doesn't mean 'queer and whomever else doesn't fit anywhere else'. 17 the administration actually promised us in 1988 when students of color and international students took over a school building and occupied it. It was agreed to in the Cole Science agreement, which we have copies of, but was one of the promises that the administration has failed to come through on. Interestingly enough though, that IS why we get Columbus day off, there's just no teach in. I think we have a good chance of getting the demands, mostly because this is a private school and our relationship with the administration is as equals -they need our tuition and our bodies.

Wow, this sounds like the stupidest thing ever, lol. An Anti-racist walkout, lol. So you want to force people to believe in multiculturalism? That is very un-American.
