This is really interesting. I am sat here at my desk. To the left of me is a Advent laptop, to my right a dell inspiron. Both running Windows Vista premium, both connected to the same wifi network.

I run windows update on both of them. One finds SP1, the other doesn't. I refresh it, and still no luck.

Guess it is time for a manual upgrade.

Anyway, anyone know what is causing this curious phenomenon? Not that it matters. It just has me baffled...

SP1 for vista is a another flop. I'm still using XP, it won't die for another few years.

From past experience, I've found it to be radio interference from venus.

Maybe they are only releasing the upgrade for certain hardware and/or company brands.

Who knows?

I have to use XP on the machines for gaming. The video drivers are far too unstable for gaming on vista. I guess the XP architecture has been developing for years and is relatively stable. I still like using linux for work these days.

It is a bit of a bugger needing 3 OS' on my computer for all my tasks, and it is a downer for a laptop hard drive. (200gb is not a lot :S )

For what? SP1 being a flop or making XP usable for another few years.

If you are on XP, how would you know?

Im on Vista SP1, and things are certainly not worse. There are some improvements, but not a ton.

It works. Ive still got my XP partition just in case.

Anyways, was one x64? They have been had the x64 update available a few days longer than the x32.

That might explain it.

Gaming on a laptop is annoying as hell for me. My laptop has Leopard and XP, best of both words, but my desktop has Vista which has crashed for the third time. I'm using my back-up PC right now.

I own three computers.

The one I'm using is my back-up PC running XP
My main Desktop is running Vista Premium but its currently fucked up and I'm not in the mood to retrieve data and reformat.
My MacBook runs Leopard and XP.

I see.

I still dont understand why you think its a flop, when it works, and it improves performance.

Which won't be a problem with Vista but more with the hardware.

I've been using Vista for over a year now and with no problems at all.

It runs smooth as fuck, been an enjoyable computer experience.

Compatibility problems with certain older games I like to play. Windows updater hogs 20% of my bandwidth while running in the background (change settings so that wouldn't happen again) and this is the third time I've had a System Networking error which locks me out Network Connects, then Windows Defender goes berserk. Also Vista is a resource hog unlike XP.

I know how smooth vista can be and I use it all the time for work.   SP1 brings some nice changes, not that they're all noticable. Few security tweaks, bringing the kernel up to 6.1, and adding compatibility and support for thousands more devices. I still maintain that most of the video drivers on vista are not as stable as their XP counterparts. Down my corridor we have numerous laptops, a high end gaming PC and an alienware PC all running vista. They're pretty smooth and such, but there are video issues on them all from time to time.

N.B. To answer an earlier question, they're both 32 bit, both i386 architecture.

Yes, vista uses more resources to run "out of the box", but computers have moved on too. If you want the smooth vista experience, get a PC capable of running it as such.

Well,,, that may make vista a flop in your opinion - but how does it make the service pack a flop, the one thing that is supposed to fix issues such as this.
