Because it was stupid. You claiming that "Done in the name of..." is an atheist copout doesn't make it true. Unless you're accusing the mass media of being anti-christian or something.

Not necessarily 'anti-Christian' but prone to sensationalism. If there is a religious connection it seems to make a 'crime' that much more newsworthy. People who claim to do these things "in the name of God/religion" are either lying or deluded. Yet atheists jump on that phrase as proof of the "evil" God. So, yes, it is an atheist strawman used in an attempt to smear religion.
