and other random college ?'s

I'm a sophmore in HS, but I've started looking at colleges just to get a jump start. On PrincetonReiview.com I took the Counselor-O-Matic test thing and I picked out a few prospective schools. The only problem is, all the good ones are about 3 hours (or more) away from where I live.
I was just wondering what everyone thought about how far they're willing to go from home for college. To me, three-four hours seems like too far in case I needed to get home for whatever reason, but what do you guys think?

Also, on a sidenote, has anyone ever heard of/visited Bennington College up in Vermont? It's one of my close options and the campus looks absolutely gorgeous, but at the same time it almost seemed too classic New England. I'm not looking for a huge social scene, but I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere either.

So... anyone got some advice for me?

It's really dependent on your dependence and desire to be near home. Personally, my top 3 schools are all over 500 miles away from home, and I couldn't be more excited. I've been independent for a long time, but for others who don't know how to do laundry being so far from home is really upsetting. Going out of state is almost always more expensive as well, and that's another decision maker when considering schools.

Wow. Uh, yeah. 3 hours away isn't very far at all. Also, why would you consider choosing your school based solely on the landscape and if it seems too stereotypical? It's also a little early to be looking at colleges and stuff since you can't really have an accurate picture of your grades yet. Also, I doubt you know what you want to do for a career and/or major in...

Woooah, thanks for all the replies!
To motorhead, I should have been more specific. The campus of Bennington is gorgeous, but  as I looked at it more I noticed it almost seemed like ... Amish country. Not to offend any Amish folk out there. I just don't want to get stuck out somewhere that's boring.
It's not that I'm not independent, it's just I feel like if I needed to get home right away 3+ hours seems too far. I guess it depends how much I want to go to the college. One of the far ones I was looking at was Dartmouth... but I haven't heard very good things about it.

I thought Dartmouth was sort of at the end of Ivy schools, or that some people don't even consider it an Ivy. It also (from what I've read) has a big Frat/Sorority scene, which isn't a plus in my books. Now that I think of it... are most Ivy schools big Frat/Sorority schools?

It depends on who you are as an individual.

I know several people who simply weren't comfortable being more than an hour away from home, so they stayed and went to local universities.  I also have several friends who wouldn't be able to stand that at all and moved to the other side of the country.

My advice to you would be to think about what you're comfortable in terms of distance from home, living in a rural vs. urban environment, the strength of the program you want to major in, and also any other factors that are important to you.

Personally, I found that I really needed to live in a big diverse city after having grown up in a small undiverse town.   I like the fact that I can take a bus/subway anywhere I want, so I don't feel like I'm trapped on campus even though I don't have a car.  Another thing I've noticed from friends who chose smaller, more rural universities was that the students there really didn't do anything but drink in their spare time and walk around the local WalMart, since there wasn't much around to do.

Again, the best thing to do is really know what kind of person you are and what environment and program would be the best for you to learn and live in.

yea i think so. and i think cornell is lower on the list than dartmouth

3-4 hours is the perfect distance IMO. you can come home if you want to, but you dont risk having your parents randomly show up or begging you to come home for your great aunts bday or whatever. i go to duke which is in NC and im from near richmond, so its about a three hour distance which is perfect. most people at my school live much further away though... 3-4 hours ish isnt much at all

It really depends on the individual, my UNi is about 3-4 hours away on the train, and it is quite expensive to get back but I don't mind so much, I know if I really needed to get back i could do. Also I'm learning, all of my friends go home when they have the sniffles but I just stick it out.
