I go to school like...20+hours away from home, and am going to grad school even farther.
It really depends on you. I love being completely independent...it is very liberating.

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair,
gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your
inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet
spirit which is of great worth in God's sight

Im in pennsylvania, and there are people in my school from all over the country, including alaska.  I stayed close to home to save money, but if I could have afforded to go farther away, I'd be in colorado right now.

I'm going to Uni an hour's drive from home, and this is completely not out of choice. Uni is a chance to be completely independent, it's such an opportunity, why not grab it?

I'm 3000 miles away from home, and I don't mind at all. If you're going to a residential college, you're going to meet all new people and make new friends anyways, and for me my education was more important than being able to see my family or old friends on the weekends. If i need to fly home in an emergency, it will suck but I'll do it.

Like others said, it depends what you perceive as being too far.

The school I will be attending in the fall is about 2.5 hours away from home. It's perfect for me because it's close enough to where I could go home on the weekends but far away to where my parents can't just drop by.

Thanks for all the replies everyone

To bexz10, I was actually planning on visiting sometime this month over my spring break, but we'll see. You guys must think I'm nuts since I'm only a sophmore, but why not get a head start?

Well, thanks again for all the advice :)

Presently, I go to a school five hours away from home, which is closer than originally planned, but not excessively so. I am looking to transfer for a multitude of reasons, and am applying to schools that are:

7.25 hours (455 miles) away  (St. Louis)
8.75 hours (555 miles) away (Rochester)
11.25 hours (714 miles) away (Philadelphia)
12.5 hours (782 miles) away (Ithica)
13 hours (840 miles) away (Atlanta)
20 hours (1235 miles) away (Houston)

Now, as to the colleges the OP asked about:

Bennington - This school is falling apart, lacks serious direction or respect, and is an overpriced art school for trust babies. Avoid this place at all costs.

Dartmouth - Excellent school. One of the more isolated, drinking-focused Ivies, but academically strong, with a heavy emphasis on undergraduate offerings (for obvious reasons). Worth looking at more closely.
