Ubuntu to be exact.

This is the first ever Linux OS I've used. Is there anything I should know?

Why would he want to pay $1200 for a computer with just as much functionality as his Linux?

Anyways, just remember Wine is available if you need it.

I just got a free copy of the Mandriva Powerpack 2008, and it is superb.  Virtually no extra set-up needed, even proprietary video drivers.

Just have fun.  Compiz Fusion is amazing once you get proprietary video drivers installed.

For any problems you might run into with Ubuntu, go to www.ubuntuforums.org.  They have an extensive community that can help work out any problems.  From wireless to random crashes, those forums have helped work out any problems I've had.

forget mac. i can build a computer and have it do just about the same as their over priced gear for less. anywho ubuntu is a great choice plus it'll improve your productivity alot if you enable the graphics on the o/s. there is a list of things to know about linux/unix o/s. this most important is to learn how to use the cli (command line interface) and the commands. buy a linux +book to start you out and buy a hacking ubuntu book from the book store to start you off. play in the cli to get a good feel because if your gui (graphical user interface / the thing where you can see the desktop and the mouse) goes away then cli is what you'll have. shoot me a message if you wanna know some more.
