Well I've put polysporin on it; what is the difference between the two?

I mean, what's teh difference between using advil or motrin?  Both use ibuprofen... or what's the difference between using tylenol and acetomenophin?  They are all the same thing, but different companies.

Anyway, a covered wound generally heals faster as well... so using an over the counter product along with a bandaid or guaze if necessary will speed up the process.  Likewise, not moving that area a great deal to avoid reopening a cut :).
