I have Tourrettes myself. The reality is, whenever there is something different than other people, others will make fun.

i don't have personal experiences but they put this stuff on t.v. and it shows the hardships they have to go through in order to go to like the prom or something like that.

You know, I had never really known about Tourette's until I went to the doctor and she suggested that maybe that's what I had... but she eliminated the possibility because I don't have any vocal tics...

Instead, I have seem to have motor tics... I don't know what they are, but I have random uncontrollable movements... and while sometimes it can be funny (like when I hit my boyfriend and honestly, it's truly uncontrollable), but other times, it's just embarrassing... people always look at me and say, "are you ok?" or "what's wrong with you?"  Makes me feel conscious about it sometimes... it's good though, it doesn't happen often in public or at work... :).

But it gives me some insight on it... and vocal tics are much more noticeable than one of the smaller tics I might have.  It's just irritating that people don't consider the fact that it's uncontrollable...  it's the world we live in, I guess... people get ridiculed for those things that aren't their fault, or those things that shouldn't even be of importance (such as clothing or wealth).  :(.

Whoah... you need to see a different doctor, because I know a LOT about Tourettes, and I know for a fact that the tics don't have to be motor.

Yeah, I've been told that you don't have to have vocal tics to have tourettes.  I ONLY have the motor tics, but we don't know what it is.  My doctor basically said, "some people get hiccups, so maybe you just get tics".  But recently they've been getting worse... used to be just the neck, now it's my arms, sometimes it's my feet (I was driving on a highway and got one, and pressed the pedal down all the way, lol.  Good thing they only last a few seconds).  And well, I guess I make random sounds sometimes too... lol, can't control those either.  I mean, sometimes it's amusing, but other times, you just hope no one notices -__-'.  Anyway, I dunno what they are, lol.  But I'm going again soon to see another doctor, this time I want answers :).

i kinda agree with you, girl but sorry to say that I'm just deadly afraid of people with Tourette's Syndrome. I'm trying to work on my extreme fear but nothing's working. now i understand why nobody at school likes me kinda

I agree on this. It's one thing find a little humor. Yet when you start ridiculing someone because of something, it went to far.

I am aware that people can't help it, and I don't ridicule it, but I also don't prevent it some of the times. There is one person in our school with it, and it makes me giggle slightly, because he'll be at his locker in the morning, bobbing his head and going in a 3-point circle, taking up most of the hall. It isn't his fault, but I smirk because he causes quite the inconvenience.

Its very unfortunate that people ridicule others for being different in a way that they do not understand, especially when it is due to an illness. im glad that you decided to take initiative and are trying to spread awareness of the problem so that hopefully people will realize what they are doing and change. Thank you for putting this topic up and trying to make a difference.

It really bugs me when people ridicule and tease others for any reason at all, but especially for "impairments" or "disabilities" for lack of better words.  I did work experience with disabled kids, teens and adults for 6 months and the amount of times people would laugh at them, point, or make snide comments...its enough to make me cry.  Some of these people don't even realsie they are being made fun of, due to their disbabilities...bah, it annoys me...

The "group" i used to hang around at school with, one of us had Tourretes. We used to laugh and joke about it, but i remember some kid took the piss. He got chinned, and it all kicked off.

There is a diffrence between a joke and making a joke.
