You dont know what you are talking about, do you?

To the original poster:
Are you talking about turning the entire box into a dedicated firewall? Or having a firewall start when you boot into Linux?

Yeah I do, there is a good tutorial from Revision3 on this by Patrick Norton.

But see, there are several Linux viruses out there, and a firewall doesnt protect from viruses, it blocks ports, preventing out going traffic, or in coming traffic.

I'm talking about a full dedicated firewall drifting.

elfqrin! What are you talking about no viruses? I just looked up linux viruses and there have been but there aren't as much as windows. Also you didn't even answer my question and what does a firewall have to do with a virus anyways?! If keyword is IF I were worried about linux and viruses then I woulda tried to take care of it.

Ok, so I assume you arent planning on using the machine for anything else?

You can build it into a firewall, but its not going to do any good if you are trying to dual boot.

If you have some extra ethernet cards, you can do this easily with the Linux Mod here.

Like I said, you arent going to be able to run Windows, and expect to run a Linux firewall at the same time on the same machine.

If you want a firewall for your Windows machine, go ahead and install Zone Alarm, it works really good. If you want one for a Linux machine, just search around the package library. There are several options.

Oh, and use the quote feature. I almost missed that you had replied

i won't be able to use a virtual machine for the firewall distro? my motherboard has two ethernet ports on it. sorry... i don't know how to use the quote feature.
i can switch in and out of linux because i have two different hard drives. one with windows and one with linux. i'll give smoothwall a try ... do you suggest 64bit? i have a 64bit processor but i'd rather have your experience with the product.

9/10 times, you will get better performance using x64 with an x64 processor.

But as for a Virtual Machine, I doubt it, because it will just block it for that machine, you would have no other way to connect to the internet from that Virtual Machine. You can try it, Im just confident that it wont work.
