The Transfer case has a tiny little servo/motor on the exterior of it that are known to go out pretty easily. Its a simple fix, a simple replacement of the tiny internal gear.

And you can't actually lock the vehicle in 4wd, its all electronic, if the PCM doesn't like it, it doesn't do it
