When you buy CDs, doesn't a portion of the revenue also go to the people who help make the actual album? Audio technicians/"engineers", production costs, et cetera? There are more people who need to get paid at the end of the day than just the artists, I imagine.
The artist is responsible for the payment of employees and services. So, yes, they need to get paid, but they can get some of that money from, say concert tickets. Really, in my eyes, I still pay the artists as much as they would get from CDs. (probably more) Now, not everyone takes the same attitude as I do, but still. I personally do not hurt the industry.

I am quite positive that the music industry is severely distorting their facts. First off, if they claim that music downloaded is would be music bought, they are so far off base. People download music beacuse they can. If they couldn't, they wouldn't, but 99% of them wouldn't be buying the albums anyway. Another possible reason that music sales are going down is because MUSIC TODAY SUCKS. Most bands today only have one or two decent songs, with the rest of the album being garbage. Why SHOULD people pay 17.99 for an album that has only one decent song on it? The genre that really suffers the most is hip hop, losing something like 40% of CD sales a year or something. Hmm... I wonder why? Maybe it's because all the popular artists are 17 year old kids making their music on myspace ('Sup Soulja Boy). I bet if N.W.A reformed, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth reformed, Guru and DJ Premier reformed, and the likes, sales would increase. Simply put, today's music is based on the concept of one hit wonders for radio play. And in the case of almost everyone I know, music downloading has only made us all buy more albums. If I hadn't started downloading music, I never would've gotten into music at all, and I wouldn't have bought the 200 CDs or so that I've bought. Fuck the RIAA.
