Intern Job Applications
Calling employers?

Alright, so I don't want to fire this into the regular forum, because I imagine a bunch of 16-year olds won't have the right experience to help me.

Anyways, I applied for a couple dozen companies out in Calgary, as I want to work out there for the summer. I can make a lot of money, and I've got a really good deal on housing so it's more economic for me to do this, as opposed to staying at home and working in Ontario.

Now, I know when applying for crappy little part-time jobs, that it's suggested you call the employer after dropping off a resume. Is that still expected of you when applying for an actual job? I e-mailed a bunch of companies Wednesday night, so making calls tomorrow would probably make for the best timing (letting things gel for a couple days). Is it professional to "badger" employers? I feel like I've already contacted them and put the ball in their hand; do I need to keep at them for this?

Thanks.

What kind of firms are you applying to?

Is this their busy season?

Do you know anyone personally you can call at these firms?

I would say give it a few days. not a lot..but enough for them to act if they are going to, and then call. Calling shows you are interested, and a go getter, but stalking is just annoying...try to find a happy medium

Engineering firms.

Not exactly sure, but I imagine a lot of other students are looking for summer work.

And no. I just went through a list of a bunch of different firms, and looked for anyone that was responsible for applications. One or two had a name attached, but most were just careers@address.com or something like that. I can go back to the sites and grab phone numbers easy enough though.

If I was going to call them, I'd first research some project they did or are working on and throw it into the call as something that interests you. It makes you memorable instead of some kid just asking to see if they got their resume.

This topic is now null and void.

I'm giving up on moving out west in favour of staying home and designing a concrete canoe for a major competition being hosted out east instead. =D
