Because if the general public found this stuff out, our world will go under pandemonium and chaos.  Yes I agree that some people will not freak out, but for the main part, society is not used to things as big as life outside our world and people would panic.  With panic there is not order, therefore our world would in a sense, "go to hell"

Do other life forms exist on other planets? Well, the chances are of course very good. Have they visited Earth? Most likely not.

Also, think about the reported cases of UFO crashes and captured Aliens. Ask yourself why these crashes have occurred so conveniently as for the government to notice but not the public. -- Meaning, it's of course chance where an accidental crash happens, and it's more probable for a crash to happen in populated areas - thus thousands of citizens themselves would have noticed it. But nope, this doesn't happen. Rather, the UFOs crash in remote locations where only the government can find it. Hmmm.....
