What's the point of a hypothesis? All I can see it doing is giving the scientist an ego boost when he's right, and reason to manipulate data when he's wrong....

EDIT: This isn't meant to be, "LOL UR STUPID Y WUD U DO DAT," it's a serious question.

You just want to know if you actually got what you expected.  I mean, why does anyone make any assertion about the future?  To have something to aim for.

But does aiming encourage corruption to the scientific method? If you say, "I hypothesize that reading gives you a larger vocabulary," and the results show that it doesn't, I'd not only be wrong (*gasp!* And everyone is completely indifferent to being wrong), but it would go against the public opinion. Thus, there is pressure to manipulate the results.

That's a flaw in the scientist, not the method.  =D

It is, but it encourages bringing the flaw out of the scientist.

A hypothesis is to be tested. In true sceintific circles, with the peer review process in effect, that doesnt happen.

1) Hypotheses are forms of documentation, half the time, the greatest discoveries contradict the hypotheses. there is no need for skewing data because it would not only be found out, but it would also be useless without substance.

2) science is used not to prove things right, but to rule wrong things out; in an attempt to find out the right. [for the things that matter anyway]
