I know some of the initial benchmarks showed them pretty even, but the super clocked 9600 actually has a HIGHER benchmark from what I heard.

Im not sure whether I want to go 9600, or 8800 though.

I know the 9600 has a higher spec, but fewer stream processors.

Anyone get their hands on a 9600 yet?

I could wait for a 9800, but I will probably only have $200, maybe $250. Kinda waiting on that tax rebate.

The 9800 will mop the floor with both of them, and we can face fact that there is probably a month or two waiting at most until it releases.

Out of those two, I would go with the 8800GTX or 8800Ultra, more stable, more secure, I read about better cooling, and you can O/C rediculously.

My price range is the problem, or else I would be waiting on the 9800.

Im not going to be able to break $300 (I KNOW this), and even if I were, I would have to wait several months more to save some more cash.

The more I read about the 9600 though, it does look like a viable option, IF they will get drivers out.

I found why it has less stream processors, and how it compensates, and it uses less power/heat than the 8800.

Not to mention, its designed with the AGEIA update in mind.

Im doing more research, but considering the cards that beat the 9600 are all $350+, Im leaning towards the 9600.

You can find a good name brand 9600GT for as cheap as $145 after rebates. Go for that over an 8800. The 9600s come standard with 512MB GDDR3 and 256bit memory interface.

Hmmm.

Huh.

Newegg is selling the 9600gts a good $30~50 cheaper then the 8800s even after rebate.

Get an 8800. Or even better, get to 9600s and overclock both.

Can you spare an extra $100?

You get TWO, I repeat TWO 9600s for a little bit over $300 off newegg.

$300s pushing it, and when I got my gear, they didnt have AM2+ SLI compatible boards, so it would cost me $600 to SLI. (Cards, mobo)

I might though, simply because I will need an SLI board SOMEDAY.

Newegg has a deal on 8800gts for $159 w/ free 3 day shipping.

I'd rather have 2 8800gts operating on a 384 bit rate then dual 9600s.

The 8800GT mops the floor with the 9600GT. It's really not worth it right now. With a few more driver releases it might surpass the 8800GT in performance but not by much. There's a reason why the 8800 is still more expensive. I'd go with one of them.

Here is AnandTech's review on the new 9800GX2 playing Call of Duty 4.

The 9800 wipes the floor with the 9600 GT in SLI! It also outperformed 3 ATI cards at once!!! At these resolutions too... it's pretty amazing to see this out of one card. Near 90 frames on UBER UBER High Defonition...

But since I know this is out of your price range, I'm going to emphsize on the 8800GT 512MB, which is lowering fastly in price (Lucky you!). The card outperformed the 9600 GT, which scored off this graph at 41.2 frames.

8800GT outperformed the 9600GT

DJ Josh, you missed one key detail.

TWO 9800s result in a mere 3.8fps then ONE 9600 GTS.

That more or less signals one on one the 9800 is worse then a single 9600.

The 9800 is essentially two 9600s on one card. Its got an integrated SLI, and just has two graphics processors, both of which are the same model used on the 9600. It shares the vRAM though.

Two 9600s wouldnt go quite as good though, because they loose some of the power trying to line it up in the drivers. The 9800 GX2 out puts it as one card.

Just as I thought.

880 sli is significantly better then 9800 sli in some games and slightly lags in others.

Plus why would you even bother to buy the 9800 gx2 when you can buy two 8800s and get essentially (and sometimes better) the same performance for less money?

One reason: Quad SLI. I think the 8800 can go up to three cards (it might be four though) but the 9800 can do four cards, and keep in mind that it already is two cards.

Basically, its like having an eight way SLI (when the technology is perfected and ready to be used).

Also, the 9 series come pre-designed to utilize the AGEIA update that will be sent out eventually. Even though all 8 series cards will get it as well, the 9 series cards have been optimized for it, which will provide additional increases in performance.

Oh, and the 9 series drivers are still in beta (bad move nVidia). When they are finalized, I would expect another 2-3FPS on Crysis, and as much as 5-10 on other games.

I would agree though that the high end 8800s are still a viable competitor, at least until nVidia finishes up perfecting the 9 series.

Oh, and look at price. With dual 8800GTXs it will cost you almost $700 to do an SLI. A single 9800 GX2 costs about $600, and you can still SLI it later on.

To me, a 9800 would be a better option (if I could afford it) simply because you still can add more cards for increased performance, you get the same current performance, and it costs about the same.
