The 9800 will mop the floor with both of them, and we can face fact that there is probably a month or two waiting at most until it releases. Out of those two, I would go with the 8800GTX or 8800Ultra, more stable, more secure, I read about better cooling, and you can O/C rediculously.
My price range is the problem, or else I would be waiting on the 9800. Im not going to be able to break $300 (I KNOW this), and even if I were, I would have to wait several months more to save some more cash. The more I read about the 9600 though, it does look like a viable option, IF they will get drivers out. I found why it has less stream processors, and how it compensates, and it uses less power/heat than the 8800. Not to mention, its designed with the AGEIA update in mind. Im doing more research, but considering the cards that beat the 9600 are all $350+, Im leaning towards the 9600.

The 8800GT mops the floor with the 9600GT. It's really not worth it right now. With a few more driver releases it might surpass the 8800GT in performance but not by much. There's a reason why the 8800 is still more expensive. I'd go with one of them.

urgh. Just as I thought. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_9600_gt_sli_performance/page4.asp http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQ3NSwzLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== 880 sli is significantly better then 9800 sli in some games and slightly lags in others. Plus why would you even bother to buy the 9800 gx2 when you can buy two 8800s and get essentially (and sometimes better) the same performance for less money?
One reason: Quad SLI. I think the 8800 can go up to three cards (it might be four though) but the 9800 can do four cards, and keep in mind that it already is two cards. Basically, its like having an eight way SLI (when the technology is perfected and ready to be used). Also, the 9 series come pre-designed to utilize the AGEIA update that will be sent out eventually. Even though all 8 series cards will get it as well, the 9 series cards have been optimized for it, which will provide additional increases in performance. Oh, and the 9 series drivers are still in beta (bad move nVidia). When they are finalized, I would expect another 2-3FPS on Crysis, and as much as 5-10 on other games. I would agree though that the high end 8800s are still a viable competitor, at least until nVidia finishes up perfecting the 9 series. Oh, and look at price. With dual 8800GTXs it will cost you almost $700 to do an SLI. A single 9800 GX2 costs about $600, and you can still SLI it later on. To me, a 9800 would be a better option (if I could afford it) simply because you still can add more cards for increased performance, you get the same current performance, and it costs about the same.
