I know some of the initial benchmarks showed them pretty even, but the super clocked 9600 actually has a HIGHER benchmark from what I heard.

Im not sure whether I want to go 9600, or 8800 though.

I know the 9600 has a higher spec, but fewer stream processors.

Anyone get their hands on a 9600 yet?

I could wait for a 9800, but I will probably only have $200, maybe $250. Kinda waiting on that tax rebate.

An 8800GT has 112 stream processors vs the 9600's 64, and they both use practically the same core, both 65nm process.
They're also almost the same price.

Yeah, the 8800GT is the same price, but the 9600GT is beating it in most of the benchmarks.

The 8800GTS/GTX are the ones beating the 9600GT, but the GTS/GTX series are a tad more expensive.

They are falling in price though.

Here is AnandTech's review on the new 9800GX2 playing Call of Duty 4.

The 9800 wipes the floor with the 9600 GT in SLI! It also outperformed 3 ATI cards at once!!! At these resolutions too... it's pretty amazing to see this out of one card. Near 90 frames on UBER UBER High Defonition...

But since I know this is out of your price range, I'm going to emphsize on the 8800GT 512MB, which is lowering fastly in price (Lucky you!). The card outperformed the 9600 GT, which scored off this graph at 41.2 frames.

8800GT outperformed the 9600GT
(Call of Duty 4 Extreme High Defonition Maxed Settings)
End of Story

Why are you surprised? The 9800 GX2 is technically two cards glued together already, it's no surprise that it beats a lower card that's SLI'd. In fact, I would have expected the 9800 GX2 to do much better than that. Think to last generation, and how much a single 8800GT beats SLI 8600s by. And here the 9800GX2 is by no means wiping the floor with SLI'd 9600s, it's only a few FPS faster.

Essentially, you have to remember that the 9800GX2 is practically SLI in all but name, it's just a single package and a single slot.

Um... what benchmarks are you reading? Everything I've seen puts the 9600GT below the 8800GT.

Exactly. The only big benefit to it, is that you can then SLI it a few more times.

Sure, it gives it that final push to beat the 8800 (in most cases) but its really not all that amazing -- unless you can buy more.

Think about it, you can SLI three, possibly four of those bad boys.

Thats like having 6-8 cards SLI'd! Now that would be freaking amazing!

Not really... The more and more GPUs you ad the worse the scaling becomes... The improvements over 3 gpus to 2 is hardly impressive.

Also something a big downer of the 9800GX2 is the fact you can't actually Dual monitor whilst taking advantage of the X2. Due to the way SLI works it's unable to output to 2 devices whilst in SLI and you need to disable it to do so. This is one reason why the 3870x2 is better but that's something different.

This is why i need to get a small PCI card to go with my 9600GT x2 i will be getting.

Yes, the scaling of GPUs goes down, but still. It will really be the only way to get insane amounts of performance.

Besides, Crossfire is even worst with its scaling. Sure, you can do dual monitors, but you loose so much performance, that you would almost be better off just dedicating one card to each (which you can do).

Crossfire's scalling is deffinantly not worse. They are about on par with each other and it also depends on the game... Take this for example

There is no clear winner.

And you say dedicate one card to each. When sli is enabled both cards can only give off one output, combined. You'd have to disable SLI completely. Which is a hassle especially when you can use the second monitor to check your temps and even xfire without having to bring it up on screen.

Thats what I was saying, you could NOT SLI and just use the second card as another card.

But anyways, Im hoping Ill be able to get a new card, the bank is being lame, and I owe them $50 now.

And what i was saying is that when one is in a game and would really benefit from SLI he wouldn't be able to use his second monitor to see whose in vent, xfire and temperatures....

Which is why when i order my second 9600gt ill be getting a nice cheap PCI gpu aswell to power my other 2 monitors.

Ok, yeah, that makes sense.

I to will be ordering a second PCI card, simply because when running dual (I notice this on my 8600 right now) you loose so much performance.

I loose like 8fps on COD4, just buy having my dual run.

Unfortunately, my second CRT died, so Im holding off for a couple nice LCDs (Im thinking 24in if I get a new video card, and maybe buying a small 15in or 17in for the second).

Yeah there is a little bit of a hit but i don't really notice it... Just got one of my 9600GT's and didn't notice any improvements really over my 8800gts 320mb, untill i clocked it to 750/1100. Im sure as the drivers mature the performance will increase- and also when i get my second :D

Yeah, well, let me know. Im still curious, if you get alot more performance, it will definately be worth it for me to get it.

I'm building a new rig in the fall, and I'm building from scratch completely. I figure by then the 9800 will drop in price and i'll grab it. What's even better is the monitors I have run at 1280x1024 and 1440x900 maxed, so I won't be able to comment on the EXTREME defontions these cards are meant to run at.

2560x1600 for example
