So, what release of Linux do you think is best? Please specify the specific release, after voting for the general set.

I am not stating that Linux is better than everything else. This is like asking which release of Windows is better, so no 'Linux sucks' posts. And besides, most people who bash Linux have no idea what they are talking about, and as such, have no value to their opinions.

My personal favorite is Kubuntu. Yes, I know. It's very common, but I really like the KDE interface, as opposed to Gnome or text.

Im a fan of the Kubuntu as well.

Personally, I like anything in the KDE environment, but Kubuntu has that ease of use that Ubuntu has.

I do love my Fedora, but Ubuntu is so user friendly.  But overall I love Fedora more.

If I could afford a RHEL key that might be tempting.

I would have to really think about it and choose between PCLOS Gnome Edition or Debian Etch. I think PCLOS fits my needs better. Fedora has never worked correctly with my hardware for some reason while all other distros did.

It really does depend what you want to use it for.  For beginners or people who want a Windows-like interface, Ubuntu would probably be preferable.

However, for different applications like large-scale networking or working exclusively from a command line, other distributions would probably be better.

I started on Red Hat 9 at Polytech, and from there looked at Fedora, which was very similar, and I have just stayed in the same line since then.

Red Hat based distributions like Fedora just make more sense to me in terms of they way things stick together, and I like the selection of packages in Fedora, and the way things work and such.

As for hardware issues, I generally don't have them, but then I generally don't buy hardware unless I know it will work with Linux.

I am a big fan of Linux Mint.  It's a build off of Ubuntu, and it also has added on wireless, graphics, and drivers support, along with all video/sound codecs already installed.  And some extra programs.  The menu and toolbars have also been customized a bit.  It's pretty stable, and I really like it.  That, and since it's pretty much identical to Ubuntu otherwise, all the tech forums advice and repositories still work perfectly in Linux Mint.  Which is a big help when trying to fix things, since the Ubuntu forums are much more active than the Linux Mint ones.

None of the above, I prefer constructing it myself, look up Linux From Scratch...general idea about compiling all the shit together.

But in reality, my distro is pretty much a better rip off of Ubuntu, uses synaptic, etc...Basically it's pretty much minimalistic. The basic install, is all the necessary components, with the wireless configuration built in, just stripped down.
Uses Gnome with Compiz, blah.

But I do use Gentoo aside from my own custom build.
