Religion as an excuse

So there I was, sitting in my Mock Trial class, and in the back of the room I hear my teacher say something along the lines of, 'Yeah, but Obahma's a Christian.'  We had been debating over him and were now in a midst of talkative students; we were transitioning and such. What he said was pertaining to Obahma's credibiltiy, and the student debating him didn't object.

I absolutley hate that religion has become an excuse.  Since when is being a Christian an addition to your credibility?  Or your ability for that matter?!  I TA'd in the Attendance Office one year and I always had parents call in and say, 'Johnny was sick. Honestly. I'm a Christian, I wouldn't make up excuses for my child.'
Oh! You're a christian!? Well, in that case, just let me excuse little Johnny for his absenses. You are Christian after all.  And that pot in his locker, it was actually Holy Prayer Herb, right? Thought so.

You never hear anyone say, 'I'm a Jew, I wouldn't lie.' Or I'm Buddhist. Or I'm Muslim. Etc.
Apparently Chrsitians are the only 'truthful' ones.

So Why is this?  When did we start allowing religion-Christianity imparticular-to become an extention of not only who we are, but how we act.  I understand that your religion has an effect on how  you act, but being a Christian doesn't automaticaly mean you give $20's to bums.  It doesn't mean you wouldn't steal something without knowing you wouldn't get caught...Those are called MORALS.  Morals and religion tie togehter, yes, but don't other religions have morals too?  I suppose it just wouldn't sound as good to say, '..I have Morals, I wouldn't lie about this kind of thing.'

Opinions?

You know what. I've never noticed this, but its totally true. Alot of teenagers do this at my school. "I'm a Christian...I'm holy...blah blah blah..."

Lots of evil people are/were Christians.

What religion, if any, do you follow? I'm just curious.

Exactly. It's as if to aay: I got a flat tire. No no, I have a PhD in Herbology, I wouldn't lie about this sort of thing.
Well, not exactly, but you know what I mean?
Other Herbologists lie.

Maybe that was a bad analogy...whatever. Haha

Actually, I have heard this from most religions. It just so happens you probably live in a predominately Christian population. I have Jewish friends, and they say similar things.

Really? you're probably right.  I'm actually relieved to hear other religions to it too though. Haha.

You'll hear this from people of a particular descent as well. Like I'm Italian, I wouldn't......or I'm Polish, we.....

I don't think it's solely Christians at all.

I have a PhD in kicking your ass!

But seriously, religion is never an excuse. Human behavior is not defined by the group, it is defined by the individual. Not that the group of Christianity is a particularly clean one..

Religion should never be an excuse for anything.  Religion is a faith in some God or Gods, so saying that a Christian is good (or bad) is like saying that people who like Einstein is smart.  It's just...dumb.

Religion is a personal choice and absolute bullshit ; I don't think it is America's buisness what faith any presidential canditate follows because there is supposed to be a seperation of the church and state - which is absolute bullshit, otherwise homosexual marriages would be legalized in all states.
