Don't you hate it when a newbie replies to the automatically generated greeting message with something like "thanks for the tips" or whatever and takes it as an invitation to send you like 10 PMs a day? Even after I tell them LW's not a chat site, I am still greeted with a "whats up" or "what u doin" or "what time is it in australia" every time I sign in. Or what about when they add you as a friend without any prior contact (apart from the automated message), just to boost their friends list. And then all their n00by friends add you as a friend. I mean jeez, this ain't MySpace. It happens to me all the time and it's damn annoying. I know they're just trying to be friendly most of the time and I'm usually friendly back because that's what support leaders are meant to do and all, but it's still annoying and whatever they have to say is usually boring too.

Yeah but then who's going to tell the noobs how to use LW? I doubt they'd want to stay if their first LW friend blocked them.

if they have questions about the site, i bet they'd ask them before trying to chat you up 10 times a day.

I have no problem when newer members PM me.  Look at my friend list, the majority are my novices that requested me as a friend so that they will have someone to talk to.

They are coming to LW usually not knowing anyone, and the first message they get is the one from us.  It is only natural that they will want to talk to someone.

If you've already nicely informed them that LW isn't a chat site, just ignore their chatty messages and hit delete.  Problem solved.

As for them adding you as a friend, it doesn't bother me.  Many new members like to add their SL's so that they have quick access to their SL if they have a question.  It's no big deal.

I would delete, but in the past they have persisted in sending me messages after I ignored them. I thought we were supposed to be nice to them anyway?

I've found that if you ignore them, they will eventually get bored quickly and leave you alone.  If they keep persisting, my suggestion would be to either keep ignoring them, or just send another polite PM asking them to stop.  Let them know that they are welcome to ask you any questions about the site, but that you don't want any PM's asking to chat.   If they *still* persist, report the messages to the mods and they'll take care of it.

I don't mind it when my novices chat to me. In fact, I quite like it. I like to talk, it shows they're taking an interest in the site and they're more likely to come back if there's someone waiting for them.

That said, I still laugh when they reply to the automated messages.

I get around to eventually telling them to use the forums, I'm not one to just talk, and it kind of irks me when someone is all over me like that.

I like it when they reply, it proves to me that they're not a troll if they say something productive.

I do like to reply aswell because you've got to be warm and welcoming to your novices, and like some people have already mentioned they do want somebody to talk to when they first join.

I like to accept my novices friend invites, it gives them easy access to me if they ever need to ask about anything, and it's a nice, welcoming thing to do.
