trying an alpha version of an os sounds too risky to me.

If it is by microsoft, its dangerous to have a new release. Always full of bugs. I think its safer to wait a little, and let their error reporting systems collect data, then you a little time after release, you can at least get patches for the serious bugs.

I'm not buying it. Reason:
XP will still be supported for several more years from atleast non-microsoft companys.
I don't need microsoft office, that's what open office is for.
Linux is making great development strides, I have confident that I will have no need for windows in a couple of years. The only reason now is games, and most of the games I play work on Cedega anyway.

I use a multi boot setup, with linux mandrake (now mandriva) and windows XP, so I can choose which to load. I prefer linux for work, but need windows for my games, and the internet (at least for now, I know someone who can write me a driver for my modem :P)

Even still there will be a point were xp is no longer supported, or barley with reduced features. I care little for windows office too,
