Is there anything you do special for Hanukkah, even if you're away from your family at college?

Do you get particuarly homesick during this time?  Do you call your family to wish them a happy Hanukkah or receive presents in the mail??

Well, I doubt you can just light up your menorah in the dorms.  I dunno, I have relatives nearby, so I'll probably go to my grandma's house...at sunset....

I find that observing Jewish holidays correctly is nearly impossible at most American colleges, to the point where making a half-hearted effort does nothing. So the closest I come to "celebrating" Channukah is wishing others a happy one any time somebody says "Merry christmas" to me. Though I suppose this year it'll be "belated happy Channukah".

For Chanukah, it depends on whether or not I'm in a place where I can light candles.  Last year, I was in the dorms, so that was out, and I basically did nothing.

I switched schools this year, and I'm in a more unique dorm, so I have a kitchen that also has a switch to cancel the fire alarm, if it goes off. So, I think tomorrow some friends and I will light a menorah we'll acquire from Hillel, and make latkes to celebrate.

As for getting homesick, nope, and no presents either.
